Hello everyone, I’m so excited to share with you all this dress I made for baby Abena. About three weeks ago, my neighbour gave birth to a pretty baby girl on a Tuesday. The moment I heard the news, I just knew that of course, I had to do something for baby me. I asked her mom what colour of dress she would like baby Abena to wear for her naming ceremony and said peach or baby pink.
Knowing how busy she was going to be in the coming weeks, I decided to make the dress in advance and take that off her list. When she was pregnant, I actually told her to give me a little me so I was so excited she gave birth to another Tuesday girl- Abena. The fun part is that, she herself is also Abena meaning as at now, we’re a gang of Abena over here.
It was a little overwhelming making this dress because it’s been a while since I made any baby clothes and I wanted to get the right measurements for a chubby baby. I thought I was going to use about 6 balls of yarns but I ended up using 4 balls of yarn and 1.60mm crochet hook for this dress. I had to restart for the second time because my mom realized the first one was going to be too small for her.
I started by making about 12 inches chain and then made 5 rows of half double crochet with an increase in each row. This was for the neck part. I then moved on to the stitch I wanted to used. Since she’s just a baby, I wanted the dress to be cozy enough m when she wears it. And also make her feel comfortable throughout the naming ceremony.
I used the v stitch and the alpine stitch. For the v stitch, I made a double crochet in one stitch, 2 chains and a double crochet in the next. For the alpine stitch, I made a double crochet using one leg of the v stitch as a base and then made the double crochet around it. In the v space, I made two double crochet , two chains and two double crochet. I ended it with with a double crochet around the other leg of the v.
I repeated this till I reached a row that was enough to be the sleeves of the dress. Since I was making a short sleeve, I marked the armhole and continued the body of the dress.
I followed the same pattern of the alpine and v stitch till I got the length I wanted.
Then I used needle and yarn to put buttons in front of the top. It looked a little boring so I decided to top it off with a bow.
For the bow, I used about 10 chains and then made four rows of half double crochet. I tied the middle part to make the bow and attached it on the dress.
And I was done. I was concerned that it may be too big or too small but my mom told me it was the right size for baby Abena.

One of my Favourite parts of the dress was definitely the buttons. I struggled to find the right buttons and when I did, it was hard to fix them. I’m glad my mom kept me company telling me about what happened when she was giving birth to me. I spent about three days on this because I wasn’t too well. Regardless of everything that happened, I enjoyed making this and I can’t wait to see it on baby Abena. Thank you for your time.
