pretty sunset

When it comes to private attractions in New York, Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City, Queens, comes to mind. This park, built along the East River facing Manhattan, is another fantastic spot to enjoy the Manhattan skyline, aside from places like the Manhattan Bridge.

The park is very accessible via public transportation. You just need to take the subway to the Vernon Boulevard–Jackson Avenue station or the Long Island City station, and after a short walk from the exit, you’ll arrive with ease.

My first visit to this park left a strong impression on me because of its view of the Manhattan skyline. However, the weather wasn’t on my side that day. It was cloudy when I decided to visit since it was close by, and unfortunately, by the time I arrived, a light drizzle had started. Still, with the mindset of “I’m already here,” I strolled through the park, which was completely empty. Though the scenery across the river was shrouded in a gray haze, the atmosphere of the park itself was quite poetic and serene.

Since I kind of missed out on the park's true beauty during my first visit, I went back on a sunny day before leaving New York. This time, under a bright blue sky and radiant sunlight, I not only enjoyed the stunning Manhattan skyline but also caught a clear view of the river’s vibrant blue, though the photos didn’t quite capture its full beauty.

With the lovely weather and gorgeous scenery, I decided to sit on a park bench and wait for the sunset. Around me, many people were walking their dogs and having picnics, while countless pigeons soared through the air. It was a great opportunity to experience the leisurely side of life.

When the sun finally set, I was deeply moved by that moment. Although the sunset wasn’t as vividly colorful as what you’d see in movies, it was still breathtakingly beautiful.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever have the chance to visit again, but I still feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced this beautiful park and its unforgettable scenery.
