Bastian, a puppy for octogenarians: the right to happiness.

A very warm greeting to one of my favourite communities, yes, I can't lie to you, I love coming back here because I feel like I am connected to so many people who really care and love their pets.

That's why every time I have something nice to show you I don't hesitate for a second.

Yesterday, at about six o'clock in the morning, we received a very urgent phone call from my husband's mother, who was very worried about the state of health of her little dog Bastian.

Bastian is a black Pekingese, barely one year old, who arrived as a little black silky ball of fur, who was never full because he was gluttonous, and was always looking for his balls to play with, very happy and affectionate, and above all hyperactive.

When Bastian arrived at my in-laws' house, being totally honest, I was not pleased with the idea, and even though he was and is a sweet puppy, I was more worried about the fact of how two older people could take care of a pet with special needs and expensive, and that's why I felt at that moment, that it was an irresponsible decision by the other members of the family, and I will explain why.

As cute as he is, will he be uncomfortable with his teeth out? I doubt it hahaha.

My in-laws are two elderly and very humble people, who already have limitations to move, live alone, and in addition, they need the support of their two children for any practical circumstance of life.

And you may or may not agree with my logic of thought, but if you analyze it, from the only factor I evaluated: practicality, everything fit perfectly.

On the other hand, I had also read that the most suitable pets for a senior citizen are cats, with a calmer personality, less noisy, independent and even disciplined to be groomed, in total contrast to what a dog represents, BUT, my oldies all the life experiences they had had up to that moment had only been raising puppies, and without exaggerating --the merit --, they have done VERY WELL.

Bastian is very restless and intelligent, but mostly affectionate.

Over the course of their eighty plus years, these people have successfully raised more than three canine pets, all of which have exceeded 10 years of life, and that alone is a very satisfying value if you are going to evaluate the quality of life they have provided for their pets.

Therefore, I left out a very important variable: THE AFFECTIVE NEEDS of two people in the twilight of their age who have been accustomed to caring for and loving a pet at home for a very long time.

So changing the optics of the problem was an obligation, because there really is no problem: having a puppy at that age is simply a solution to one of the great problems of human beings: THE FEAR of loneliness, which in contrast will come loaded with moments of much affection, the motivation to take a walk with your puppy that will make them feel better connected with society, with reality, including the immense and satisfying feeling of security with their pets in their homes.

They simply love their Bastian.

Pets accompany, demand attention and force you not to be trapped in an existential limbo of alienations and insecurities.

THEY FORCE YOU TO FEEL ALIVE ALL THE TIME.

Undoubtedly one of the best therapies to keep the flame of life burning is to keep your pet by your side -- whether you are old or not -- and for that alone, my old people have every right in the world to continue enjoying Bastian's vital and wonderful liveliness, with the support and help of his children.

That morning Bastian woke up sick to his stomach, we brought him to our house, waiting for the arrival of the vet to check him up... during the wait my Chloe (the chihuahua) nagged him, kept him in line and let him know that that territory was hers, bad temper that she always has with her equals... but I think that none of that interested him much, because he knows that this is also his home.

Thank you so much for reading, and until the next adventure my beautiful pet lovers.

I understand your concerns. If older people have a back up plan for the dog, if anything happens to them, it's fine. I look forward to the next adventure!

I avoided talking about plan B, but of course there is, when a family project like this is approved, there must be responsible parties, otherwise nothing makes sense.
The little dog has three homes instead of one, and that's the most important thing....plus he loves to stay for short seasons in each of them, plus the walks he gets.
I think so far so good.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

That's what I heard from older people, they feel like it has become part of their family too especially when most of their children lived far away. I hope if anything happens to Bastian, you're always present and ready to help them.

Yes, it is a decision taken and assumed, in fact Bastian loves to be every now and then in the other family houses, and has been adapting to them, fortunately.

Thank you @macchiata for your comment.
