"Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story" is a biographical book written by Dr. Ben Carson, a renowned American neurosurgeon, and Cecil Murphey, a professional writer. First published in 1990, the book chronicles Dr. Carson's remarkable journey from a struggling student to becoming one of the world's leading neurosurgeons. Born on September 18, 1951, in Detroit, Michigan, Ben Carson's early life was marked by poverty, racism, and a broken home. His parents divorced when he was eight years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his older brother alone. [IMAGE CREDIT BY ME]

Despite these challenges, Ben's mother played a pivotal role in shaping his future. She emphasised education and encouraged Ben to read widely, often taking him to the library. However, Ben struggled academically, particularly in mathematics. A turning point came when Ben's fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Williamson, encouraged him to participate in a science fair. Ben's project on rocks and minerals sparked his interest in science and medicine.

Ben's determination to succeed grew stronger. He began to study diligently, often reading for hours each day. His grades improved significantly, and he became one of the top students in his class. Ben attended Southwestern High School in Detroit, where he excelled academically and became senior class president. He then enrolled at Yale University, graduating in 1973 with a degree in psychology.

Ben attended the University of Michigan Medical School, earning his M.D. in 1977. His internship and residency took him to Johns Hopkins University, where he specialised in neurosurgery. Dr. Carson's exceptional surgical skills and innovative techniques quickly earned him recognition. He became the director of paediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital at age 33.

Dr. Carson's achievements are numerous. He successfully separated conjoined twins, developed new surgical techniques, and advocated for healthcare reform. Throughout his journey, Dr. Carson credits his faith in God and his mother's guidance for his success. He married Candy Rustin in 1975, and they have three sons.

Reading "Gifted Hands" had a profound impact on me. Dr. Carson's story taught me that perseverance and determination can overcome even the most daunting challenges. His journey showed me the importance of education, hard work, and faith in achieving success. I was inspired by his resilience and humility, despite facing numerous obstacles.

Dr. Carson's story also made me realise that anyone can achieve greatness, regardless of their background or circumstances. His life was profoundly shaped by his mother's unwavering love, remarkable resilience, and courageous encouragement. Sonya Carson's steadfast support and guidance helped him overcome adversity, fostering a strong foundation for his future success. Her bravery in the face of challenges inspired Ben to persevere, while her emphasis on education and faith instilled values that would define his journey. Through her selfless devotion, Sonya Carson empowered her son to achieve greatness, demonstrating the transformative power of a mother's love and influence.

His commitment to helping others, particularly through his medical work, motivated me to pursue my passions and make a positive impact in my community.
