Summer is in full swing with consistently hot days in my part of Germany. The bitter melons have finally started to climb the strings I have set up 😁 I can see the male flower buds and since I have planted almost 10 plants, we will be able to harvest some at least. Good!
The bitter melons with white fruits are growing slower than regular ones, perhaps because it is a characteristic of the variety, or they were planted in a slightly shady area. I removed some leaves of strawberries planted in the same container so that they can get more sunlight. Let's see. Waiting is also important part of gardening 😉
Watering is much easier this year than in previous years, and I only have to water the pots once every few days where rain doesn't drop. However, the fact that we have quite hot days followed by severe thunderstorms seems to be an unusual weather condition ... I wish we are not harming the environment with our modern life.
Let's go back to a happy topic. Here is how I reduce watering. The straw-lined containers in the places where they gets rain like this one needs rarely watering. I learned this technique on YouTube.
The straw I use is straw for pets that I can buy inexpensively at drugstores. I have used it for the past few years and have had no trouble with it, and it is very useful because it goes back into the soil. In the fall I add compost on top of the straw.
I had pots that tended to be dry out in a place where it didn't get rain, so I put straw on them. I often forget to water these pots and hopefully this will alleviate my mistake.
In addition to that, my family slept long today, so I sorted out the overgrown and old plants and added cilantro seedlings. It is called "Succession Planting", a method of replanting and adding plants time by time. It sounds easy, but it took me a few years to get used to it and become a routine. I am happy to learn and acquire new techniques 😊
Talking about succession planting, I have potted up kale seedlings for end of summer planting in the final positions. They are Italian black kale that is cold tolerant and useful in winter. It adds a beautiful dark, almost black green color to pasta, omelets and so on. It is also a valuable winter foliage. The one on the left is a traditional species of palm kale from northern Germany that will grow to human height if it does well, but I wonder how it will do on our balcony. Let's see!
I was tidying up the balcony and found my daughter's cup. I guess she was mimicking me and having a relaxed time there 😁 Nice to find this.

ドイツの私が住んでいる地域でも安定して暑い日が続くようになり、夏本番です。ゴーヤがようやく設置した紐をこちらの思惑通り登り始めてくれました 😁 雄花のつぼみが見えて、10株近く植えたこともあり、何かしらは収穫できるでしょう。よしよし。
白い実がなるゴーヤは品種の特性なのか、植えた場所が若干日陰気味だったからか、普通のゴーヤより成長が遅いです。同じプランターに植わっているいちごの葉っぱを少し整理したので、少し日当たりがよくなるかな。ゆっくり成長を見守ることにしましょう。ガーデニングでは待つのも大事です。
今年は例年と比べてはるか水やりが楽で、雨が降っても水がかからないプランターに数日に一度水をやるくらいです。ただ、カンカンに暑くなったあと、激しい雷雨があるのは異常気象のようで、自然環境を大事にしないとねとも思うのでした。
こんな感じで、雨が当たる場所のわらを敷いたプランターはほぼ水やり不要です。
私が使っているわらは、ドラッグストアで安価に買えるペット用のわらです。この数年使ってみて特にトラブルはなく、土に帰るので重宝しています。秋にはわらの上からコンポストを足します。
雨が当たらない場所でかわきがちな鉢があったので、わらを敷きました。Before / afterでこんな感じです。この鉢は水やりを忘れがちで、これで私のミスを緩和できるといいな。
そのほか、家族が遅くまで寝ていたこともあり、成長しすぎたり、古くなったりした植物を整理して、コリアンダーの苗を植え足しました。「Succession planting」と呼ばれている、どんどん植え替え、植え足しをしていく手法で、日本語ではなんというのだろう・・・。簡単そうなのですが、慣れてルーチンのようにできるようになるのに数年かかりました。
夏の終わりの植え替え用のケールの苗を鉢上げしました。耐寒性があって冬に重宝するイタリアの黒ケールです。パスタやオムレツに濃い濃い黒に近い緑を足してくれます。冬の貴重な葉物でもあります。一番左に写っているのは、ドイツ北部の伝統種の椰子の木ケールで、うまくいくと人の背丈ほどまで育つそうですが、うちのバルコニーではどうなることでしょう。
バルコニーを片付けていたら子供のコップが置いてありました。私の真似をして一服していたのかな 😁 人生のちょっとした楽しみを覚えていっているのだろうかとなんだかうれしい気持ちになりました。おやつにトマトをつまんでいるのを見たり、こういうのを見たりすると、もう子育て十分頑張って気になってしまいます・・・まだまだあるけれど。。
