Micro Balcony Garden Journal 2024 - Nov 24 /

in #hive-140635last month

For a few years now, I’ve been debating whether or not to get a yuzu tree. Recently, I finally decided to take the plunge and ordered one. I placed the order in early November, and after two weeks of waiting, it finally arrived! I was surprised to see it packed in a much larger box than I expected.

Yuzu tree in the box

This week, there was a public holiday in my region, which caused shipping delays. It took about five days for the tree to travel from the nursery to my place. Knowing it had been in a box for so long, I was anxious as I waited for its arrival, especially after receiving a notification about the delay. When I finally opened the box and saw healthy leaves and fruit—not upside down or damaged—I was so relieved and overjoyed that I nearly jumped with excitement.

Yes, it's doing good!

Once I unpacked the tree, I was greeted by something very characteristic of citrus trees—fierce, sharp thorns! The branches were so vigorous they seemed almost wild, twisting in all directions.

My strong wild yuzu tree

I know the thorns are there to protect the tree from predators, but they can also damage its own leaves and fruit. Oh, yuzu, please be kinder to yourself!

Yuzu thorn damages a leaf ...

I had already watched several YouTube videos about growing citrus trees and learned that removing the thorns doesn’t harm the tree—in fact, it’s often beneficial. Since I’d recently pruned the thorns of my lemon tree, I applied the same technique to the yuzu. Still, these thorns were impressively fierce!

Thorns I removed

After thinning out some overlapping branches and tidying the tree, I placed it on my balcony. Yuzu trees are hardy down to around -10°C, so I’ll monitor how it does outdoors over the next few days. I’m just so thrilled to finally have my yuzu tree 🥳 🥳 🥳

Pruning and removing the thorns helped clear my mind as well. I had quite some frustration this week but the yuzu tree helped me a lot.

One of the larger fruits got scratched during transport, so I’ve decided to use it to make a yuzu pound cake.

As for my Hive Fest fig, it’s still quietly residing in the kitchen, taking its time as usual. I hope it’s thriving as a fig and not something else! For now, all I can do is keep an eye on it, making sure it doesn’t dry out in the warm indoor air.

There is another new comer on the balcony. A few years ago, I bought a bird feeder kit, but my daughter and I recently completed it together. Seeing a beautiful, round, green Kohlmeise visited our balcony the other day finally motivated us to finish the project. We’ve filled it with sunflower seeds and radish greens—hopefully, our feathered friends will enjoy the treat!

This little micro balcony of ours still has somethings going on, even as winter approaches. I took break in the winter time for my garden journal but this year I’ll keep writing until I run out of topics to share.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Sunday. Happy gardening 🌱

Happy Gardening!

remembering that yuzu has many thorns, and you do trim them very useful for your own safety.

That's right too. I saw some people wearing really thick groves for harvest :) Luckily I just have one tree for home use so I can manage the thorns.

しかしまぁ、トゲと言うより、布団針のような・・・@@;

It’s a grafted tree, and you can consider it a bonsai because it was grown in a small pot. You can expect that it requires proper care. It needs sunlight, preferably natural fertilizer applied once every two weeks, and avoid frequent watering—ideally, once every 15 days with just two glasses of water to prevent the roots from rotting. Unless, of course, you transfer it to a larger pot. =)
