Splinterlands — Yodin Zaku VS Byzantine Kitty

Hello everyone, welcome 👋, this is my post for the Splinterlands Social Media Challenge!

In this challenge, I will show you one of my battles from the recent Ghost Card Fun Time tournament , which allowed all players to play with all the cards of each edition at the max level in the Wild Format. But I remember that some of the beta summoners were not available.

I really like these open tournaments, since it is a lot of fun to play with a top level deck, even if there are no prizes. I hope Splinterlands keeps doing this.

In this battle, as the title says, the summoner Yodin Zaku will face Byzantine Kitty. Well, actually the monsters summoned by them will fight. But both summoners will still play a decisive role as they will grant different abilities to their units, making them stronger or faster. And of course, that completely changes how the monsters perform on the battlefield.

So let's see which summoner helped the most in this battle, but first let's look at some information about Zaku and Kitty:

  • Zaku is much more aggressive than Kitty, typical of fire cards, as he grants the Blast ability to his allies, allowing them to deal half damage (rounded up) to units adjacent to the target unit they attack.

  • Zaku is usually played with ranged monsters to take advantage of the +1 ranged attack, so the Return Fire ability causes him problems.

  • Zaku's units can deal a lot of damage, but as long as their attacks don't miss. That is why it is necessary to increase the speed of allies and/or slow down enemies using monster abilities.

  • Kitty makes allies much faster, giving them +2 speed. If combined with the Swiftness ability, enemies may have trouble attacking them.

  • Monsters will have 100% accuracy when attacking their targets, thanks to the True Strike ability granted by Kitty.

  • Kitty will heal the friendly monster that is in the first position at the start of each round.

  • Allows the player to use dragon element cards, and one more element available for battle, unlike Zaku who can only use fire units.

No monster that has melee attack will be able to enter the battlefield. Monsters will have the Blast ability, meaning they deal half damage (rounded up) to units adjacent to the target unit. And the last ruleset will be Equalizer, which makes all monsters have the same health as the monster on whichever team has the highest base health.

Zaku will be on my side in this battle, you might want to ask, why? since the monsters will already have the Blast ability due to one of the rulesets. Or maybe not :P, well, I thought the enemy would defend much more against magic units, so I chose Zaku mainly because of the +1 ranged attack, and 'cause I wanted to use an ambush fire unit that I'll mention later.

Onyx Sentinel 6.png
I needed a monster that had the shield and void abilities, so after much thought, I decided to chose Onyx Sentinel. I know its Thorns ability won't be useful in this battle, but its Return Fire ability (when hit by a ranged attack it will deal half damage, rounded up, back to the attacker) will be very useful.

Beetle Queen in the second position, I choose it because it is the strongest fire card that costs 4 mana that is not a melee monster. I lied, I ran out of time and just clicked on the monster closest to the mouse pointer :P. But at least this queen will heal her frontline ally for up to a third of their health each round. Unfortunately, her Inspire ability, won't work since it only affects melee monsters.

Spark Pixies, the fastest ranged fire element unit in the game. It has the Flying (25% chance to evade melee and ranged attacks from non-flying monsters) and Dodge (25% extra chance to evade melee and ranged attacks) abilities, making this card even harder to hit with non-magical monsters. And finally, it has a 50% chance when attacking to stun the enemy target, preventing them from making any movement on the next turn.

I know that my ranged monsters will need more speed, as it would be disastrous if their attacks missed. That's why I choose Supply Runner, which increases the speed of his allies by 1. And not only that, his Strengthen ability, increases the health of his allies by 1.

And why not more speed?, Countess Sinash, like her ally, will grant +1 speed. Sinash has 4 more abilities, one of which allows her to attack the enemy with the lowest health. Sinash's attacks have a 50% chance to apply Affliction to the enemy target, making them unable to heal. And also her attacks have Blast, which is already provided by the ruleset and Zaku. And her last ability, Camouflage, will prevent the enemy monsters from attacking her directly unless she is in the first position.

And Rush Townsend will be my last ranged unit, who is also a fox like Zaku, will they be related? Maybe. Well, let's continue, this card can attack before the battle begins, better know as the Ambush round. Like his ally Sinash, he can also apply Affliction. Additionally, he has piercing attacks, if it deals more damage than the enemy's armor, the remainder will damage the target's health. And lastly, amplifies the damage of Onyx Sentinel's return fire by 1.

Watch on Splinterlands

This was, in my opinion, an exciting battle to watch. One thing I didn't mention, is that since the Equalizer ruleset is active, Almo Cambio was not an option for me since it has 16 health, and there is no way for any monster of mine to increase the health of the enemy units. Almo was played by the opponent, so it was good for my monsters. Almo could be a problem since it had 8 speed, but my monsters also had very fast speed.

Thanks to Zaku, my ranged monsters had much more damage than the enemy units, but the enemy countered the blast ability very well with 2 monsters that had the Reflection shield, blocking the blast damage. As the monsters attacked each other, my ranged units slowly took more control of the battlefield. Thus achieving victory with my 2 remaining monsters , one of them poisoned.

So this time, Zaku and his allies won the battle against the legendary Kitty.
