Freshers today come with a lot of technical knowledge

It is surprising to see how good the freshers are today. Today, I was having a conversation with my manager in the office, and he shared how good freshers are these days. Irrespective of the course they are studying, some freshers are packed with a lot of knowledge, and they are able to keep up with someone who has been with the company for several years. The amount of exposure the freshers have is amazing.

Experience from internships

Today some people get the opportunity to do some internships when they are in their third year. With the help of the internet, they also explore additional work online, participate in hackathons, and get some exposure from there. The internship certificate was just an entry point during my college years. Still, today internships are very serious, and most likely people work in a company for free and learn a lot of things before they go to their actual jobs. Some people even get full-time jobs in companies where they do their internships.

Hands-on experience in open-source projects

Open-source projects provide a lot of learning opportunities. The exposure from open source projects helps in learning about the code base and the way the code is usually structured in an enterprise project, working with different team members, and how to add innovations to an existing idea or project. Working on open source projects helps in gain a lot of experience that is very useful to crack some of the interviews. These experiences are both technical as well as behavioral.

Knowledge of Multiple technologies

Today it is amazing to see the freshers having hands-on experience in multiple technology stacks. If we talk to them about something. They at least know the basics and they can provide more information on the topics. This multiple technology knowledge helps in getting themselves adapted to any technology. Some freshers are ready to even work on contradicting technologies and they can understand the pros and cons of different technologies because of the vast knowledge they possess on something.

Competition is tough for existing employees

As the new employees are very good, it creates a big pressure on the existing employees, especially the ones who have not upskilled over the years. Sometimes when appraisal happens the comparison is made with the fresher employees and how good they are with vast knowledge. Of course, experience is also an important thing but staying on the same job for several years and doing the same type of job for several years is going to make things tough with a fresher with enormous skills who is just getting started.

Adapting to change and continuous learning are vital in today's fast-paced tech landscape. Both freshers and seasoned employees need to embrace growth to thrive together.

When existing employees realize that the new employees are very good, it puts them on their toes and make them work even harder

Well, having enormous skills would help in the service segment, but in product development experience always matters. More ever, there are times, when critical issues in production needs to be fixed in a urgent basis, and experience matters most in that case.

Absolutely. I remember a story that I read long back. A ship had some issues and about 50 engineers on that ship were unable to fix it. Then an experienced old man came with a hammer and hit it somewhere and the issue was fixed. The old man then sent a costly bill. When asked why is it this costly to just hit something with a hammer which anyone could do. The old man said,

"Yes you are right. Anyone can hit with a hammer. But only I know where exactly to hit. Hitting in the wrong place can create other problems. That's the power of my experience."

Internships provide a lot of knowledge and experience and students can get to know the mindset of the employees. Companies provide this opportunity even though they are very busy. I also did internships, they spent a lot of time looking after us.
