Waste management is one of the biggest problems in the world, especially for developing countries compared to developed nations. People don't understand that it is a very big industry that can make a lot of money. I was watching some videos on YouTube that showed how Singapore is managing waste. Most of the waste collected on a particular day is processed on the same date.
Some think that Singapore is one of the world's wealthiest countries, and that's why they can manage this but if planned very well, it can be done in any country in the right manner.
The process
I may not be fully right about things being done, but I have seen some videos and understood the following. When the waste is collected from everywhere, it is taken to this huge factory that separates the waste from organic to inorganic waste. Everything is then burnt. The gases emitted while burning are properly filtered to release only harmless gases outside. The burning process helps in generating electricity and the residue formed after burning is used as a material to create roads in Singapore.
Even though there are some controversies about the harmful gases not being filtered out properly, this is a successful process and it is managing the waste every day and they are able to make good use of the waste in a eco-friendly manner.
Managing the plastic waste
Plastic waste is the biggest pain to manage. The use of plastic has drastically gone up in every other country and some countries have some basic restrictions on plastics. Microplastics are also creating health problems for individuals but despite that, we are continuously using them. The way Singapore is handling plastic waste is amazing. They can convert plastic waste to waste materials that can be ultimately used for construction materials or for laying roads. They say that some of the best roads in Singapore were born out of plastic waste. Every country should learn from this and try to manage their plastic waste very well.
Power generation from waste
Power generation from waste is another big innovation that Singapore is doing. They are taking care of their power needs with this itself. In countries like India, we are burning fossil fuels to generate electricity for our needs. But using waste will solve two purposes here where it helps in reducing the waste in the country and also helps in producing the electricity required for the country. This is a good way to manage the waste.
