Ada sighed as she peeked out of her car window for the upteenth time. She also slammed the horns of her Toyota Camry so hard,it felt like they would explode. She knew she was venting her frutrations but what else could she do other than that.
"If only I had left te office at 12 noon instead of 4pm. I'm sure I won't be stuck in this eternal traffic jam with no where to turn" she chided herself.
Flashback
It was friday, Christmas day and also the last working day of the year for Coscharis Enterprises, well at least for Ada. She had been called in by her boss to round up her team report and email it to him. Her boss also specified some documents that she needed to look into since he was not in the country. Having less of a choice, she resumed work on Christmas day. She didn't even have the luxury to attend church service that morning nor did she eat out of the delicious chicken stew she had prepared the previous night. All she had was her usual breakfast of coffee and some slices of bread.
She got to the office and went right to signing the documents placed on her table. Being a head of department was very tasking and demanding but there were mouth watering benefits attached with it.
Glancing at the clock briefly, she read the time to be 10:00am. "Okay, I will try and finish up these tasks and then head home to enjoy Christmas" she said to herself out loud. Just as she wanted to continue with signing the document open before her, her phone rang. Looking at the caller ID, she smiled coquettishly, knowing fully well who was calling.
"Hello love, how are you doing? Hope you are not overworking yourself?" A baritoned male voice boomed out of the phone's earpiece but it was music to her ears.
"Hello darling, I'm fine. Yes the work is much but I can handle it. How are you?" She replied the caller.
"I'm fine babe. I just wanted to remind you of our arrangement today at 5pm. I've made special plans for us at home. All that is needed is for you my angel to walk through the door with your beautiful self" he responded.
"Oh Dennis, stop it, you're making me blush here. Don't worry dear, I'll be home on time. I can't wait to see what you got as a surprise" she answered.
"I trust you babe. See you then, bye love you" Dennis voiced into her ears and she almost turned beet red from sheer happiness.
"Love you too bye. Who says love is not good. Dennis is a perfect answer to such silly remarks" she thought inwardly, dropped her phone and continued with her work.
"Oh no, have I been here that long?" Ada asked no one in particular as she read the time on the wall clock to be 3:50pm. Jerking up from the chair she was sitting on prior, she quickly gathered the remaining documents with the intent of taking it home to finalize before sending it to her boss via email later. Right now, meeting up with her fiance Dennis was top priority. After taking all she would need from the office, she closed the doors at exactly 4pm.
She hurriedly left the company, entered her car and began to drive away from company grounds and unto the expressway. She had barely gone a fair distance when she was confronted with a long line of vehicles all fixed to a spot and unmoving. "Oh no, qyhy this traffic at this time?" She complained but she had no choice as she had to wait patiently for the traffic to ease, so that she could get home to her lover.
What she thought would take a few minutes atmost has now taken one hour fifteen minutes. She had been stuck in traffic for that long and now she was frustrated and angry. She thought of Dennis waiting for her and a sad feeling overwhelmed her. "Hope he won't think that I deliberately stood him up or tht I value my work more than him" she hissed at the thought. Picking up her phone to call Dennis, she saw that her phone battery had died. "Darn! what am I to do now?" She slammed the phone angrily on the passenger seat, hissing loudly.
Feeling defeated, she quickly bargained with God in prayers. "Dear God, if you get me out of this traffic, I will not miss Christmas service again for anything. Please help me Lord." She said almost at the brink of tears. She waited calmly to see what would happen. Would heaven smile on her or not. After about ten minutes, she was aome military men crossing over to help with easing the traffic and she almost jumped for joy. With the help of the military personnels, the traffic eased, vehicles were now moving and traffic returned to normal. As she drove forward to a point, she discovered that the traffic jam was caused by impatient commercial bus drivers involved in a brawl as they tried to outdoor the other in attracting passengers.
Giving them a bombastic side eye, she made her way home to quickly meet up with Dennis. All the way home, she kept imagining what the surprise would be but nothing seemed to click in her head. She refrained herself and decided to let it rest, since in a matter of minutes she would be home and would get to see the surprise herself.
On getting home at about 6:20pm, she hurriedly ran inside without a care for her car. Entering the sitting room, she found it empty. Feeling despair, she fell on a couch amd began to so. She thought Dennis had abandoned her because she was held up in traffic nd couldn't meet up with their planned arrangement. She wanted to cuss at her voss for calling her in ror work today. She also wanted to cuss at the damn drivers who caused the traffic on the road but she couldn't. All she could do was sob.
There was a sound at the door but she was too unfocused to notice untill the person at the door came in and she ran to him to give him a bear hug. "Dennis, where were you. I thought you abandoned me. Thank goodness you are back" she aiad all im one breadth.
"Why would you think that I would abandon you. I stepped out to buy some things that I forgot but I was held up at the store due to a huge influx of customers at the mall. Hope I didn't keep you waiting?" He asked but she smiled and nodded her head, explaining to him that she also arrived thirty minutes back because she was held up in traffic.
"I guess we were both delayed right?" He asked half laughing as he held her by the hand, leading her inside. After a brief moment to freshen up, Ada came downstairs in a dazzling silver gown.
She walked to the dinning table and saw that it was filled with lots of dishes. "Hmm, someone sure outdid himself" she said jokingly while smiling at him. Just then Dennis stood and walked up to her and presented a gift to her "Merry Christmas my love" he said as he waited for her to open up the box. When she did, she could not contain her joy as she said a "yes" to Dennis. Both of them hugged each other with a bright satisfied smile on their faces.
