Una reflexión de emigrante de cara al 9 de Julio, Día de la Independencia Argentina
Se acerca el 9 de Julio, fecha clave para Argentina, y a diferencia de otras ocasiones, este año he reflexionado sin siquiera quererlo sobre algo: Qué ironía.
Qué ironía yo y qué “tomada de pelo” yo misma escribiendo sobre esto.
Seré un poco cruel con nosotros quienes estamos eligiendo vivir fuera de la Argentina en este momento. Bueno, no sé si “cruel”, pero realista.
El otro día estaba sentada comiendo en el comedor de la casa en la que alquilo una habitación por la “módica” suma de €700 por mes y esta idea vino a mi cabeza:
Estamos eligiendo vivir en la tierra de los colonizadores. Estamos sometiéndonos nosotros mismos, estamos yendo como por un túnel justo “a la boca del lobo”.
Muchos conceptos aparecen en mi mente en respuesta a esta reflexión, pues la globalización del siglo XXI no es la misma que ocurrió por primera vez cuando el señor Colón desembarcó en “las Américas”.
Estoy a favor de la emigración y lo seguiré estando. Quisiera aclararlo antes de seguir escribiendo. Sin embargo de pronto sentí un “desagradecimiento” muy real cuando comprendí lo tanto que lucharon otros para liberar a Argentina de las manos españolas para que hoy elijamos voluntariamente venir a vivir a la tierra de aquellos que nos sometieron durante tanto tiempo y que, no solo eso, sino que también tomaron cuanto nos pertenecía, incluida nuestra cultura nativa.

A migrant's reflection in the run-up to 9 July, Argentina's Independence Day
The 9th of July is approaching, a key date for Argentina, and unlike other occasions, this year I have reflected without even wanting to: What irony.
How ironic of me and how "taken for a ride" myself writing about this.
I will be a bit cruel to those of us who are choosing to live outside Argentina at the moment. Well, I don't know about "cruel", but realistic.
The other day I was sitting eating in the dining room of the house where I rent a room for the "modest" sum of €700 per month and this thought came into my head:
We are choosing to live in the land of the colonisers. We are subjugating ourselves, we are going like through a tunnel right "into the lion's den".
Many concepts appear in my mind in response to this reflection, for the globalisation of the 21st century is not the same as the one that first occurred when Mr. Columbus landed in "the Americas".
I am in favour of emigration and will continue to be so. I would like to make this clear before I continue writing. However, I suddenly felt a very real "ungratefulness" when I realised how hard others fought to free Argentina from Spanish hands so that today we choose voluntarily to come and live in the land of those who subjugated us for so long and who, not only that, but also took everything that belonged to us, including our native culture.
He notado que somos demasiados los argentinos y argentinas que estamos viviendo fuera del país, y eso me parece hermoso, fascinante, no hay una experiencia y aprendizaje que pueda compararse con emigrar, aunque te vayas por unos meses o unos años. Tu cabeza jamás vuelve a ser la misma.
Como persona es mágico y expansivo, pero claro, indudablemente a la tierra en donde nacimos, no le hacemos ningún bien, aunque elijo NO caer en discursos manipuladores y culposos que señalan a los emigrantes como unos crueles seres que “abandonamos” el país.
Así como Argentina fue liberada de manos españolas, hoy nosotros elegimos independizarnos de los límites administrativos donde nacimos, alias Argentina.
¿Volvemos al origen? Algunos. ¿Nos metemos en la boca del lobo? Quizás. ¿San Martín y todos los involucrados no pueden creer lo que ven? Sin duda alguna NO pueden creerlo, tanto laburo al p… (igual no olvidemos que muchos de ellos eligieron morir en Europa incluso habiendo sido parte de cambios en extremo positivos para Argentina).
I have noticed that too many Argentines are living outside the country, and I find that beautiful, fascinating, there is no experience and learning that can compare with emigrating, even if you leave for a few months or a few years. Your head is never the same again.
As a person it is magical and expansive, but of course, undoubtedly, we do not do any good to the land where we were born, although I choose NOT to fall into manipulative and guilty discourses that point to emigrants as cruel beings who "abandoned" the country.
Just as Argentina was liberated from Spanish hands, today we choose to become independent from the administrative boundaries where we were born, aka Argentina.
Do we go back to where we came from? Some. Do we step into the lion's den? Perhaps, St. Martin and all those involved cannot believe their eyes? They certainly can't believe it, so much work for the f... (but let's not forget that many of them chose to die in Europe even though they were part of extremely positive changes for Argentina).
En fin, sí pienso que esto “parece una joda”, Europa repleta de argentinos que AMAMOS al país desde lejos y nos abrazamos como sociedad en tierras extranjeras; pero también reafirmo lo que muchas veces dije: nacimos donde nacimos y eso no tiene por qué implicar un límite. Podés llevar tu nacionalidad y ciudadanía orgullosa/o a donde vayas, podés resonar con mucho de tus raíces, pero al final fuimos las personas quienes establecimos los límites. Por eso, somos las mismas personas quienes podemos ir mucho más allá de ellos.
Siempre creo que la emigración no debe ocurrir en respuesta a la situación económica que se vive en el país, aunque este pueda ser un factor de buen peso. Considero que la emigración debe estar motivada más por el deseo de cambio, de crecimiento, de coraje, de aprendizaje. Pues de pronto hay demasiados desafíos al emigrar y si se mira desde la comparación con “tu” país, podés resultar muy conforme o todo lo contrario. Sin embargo, emigrar siempre es crecer, aunque la estés pasando mal.
Anyway, I do think that this "seems like a joke", Europe is full of Argentines who LOVE their country from afar and embrace each other as a society in foreign lands; but I also reaffirm what I have often said: we were born where we were born and that does not have to imply a limit. You can carry your nationality and citizenship proudly wherever you go, you can resonate with much of your roots, but in the end it is the people who set the boundaries. Therefore, it is the people themselves who can go far beyond them.
I always believe that emigration should not happen in response to the economic situation in the country, although this can be a very important factor. I believe that emigration should be motivated more by the desire for change, for growth, for courage, for learning. Because suddenly there are too many challenges when you emigrate and if you look at it from the comparison with "your" country, you can be very happy or quite the opposite. However, to emigrate is always to grow, even if you are having a bad time.
