As the industry continues to shift, there has been a rapid decline in many aspects of our lives as well as the increase (of unwanted) things, too. Back in the day, we used to have our jobs done on site as well, there was a lot of walking around and a lot of activities that kept up metabolism. However, the world has changed and with it, the system that makes it go round.
Gone are the days when work was all about just lifting weights and pushing trolleys. Ever since the birth of Covid, all major industries went into the remote system and many remained that way. Even without that, the work space now offers jobs outside of its location, mostly to save cost. Paying a person in Nigeria to work for a company in the U.S seems cheaper as the currencies are of different values, the policies different too.
With all that said, do we bear in mind that now more than ever is the time to look after our health? The body, as much as it needs rest, also needs activity. Other than activity, it also needs the right amount of care.
Anti-Blue Glasses
We sit all day exposed to our screens and the light that comes from them which is not healthy. While distance from electronic devices is advised, it is also recommended that we protect our eyes with glasses. I own one, thanks to my dear wife and I use them often. As trivial as it seems, these glasses do help you.
Regular Breaks
I use the Pomodoro technique during work. Thanks to YouTube, you can find just the right playlist for that. I do like to work sometimes with music. There are channels that offer you music as well as a timer to help you keep track of your working time. I, for example, work intensely focused for 25 minutes and take a 5-minute break after that. I found this to be highly effective too. Helps with completing my projects and also resting my brain and eyes for a couple of minutes; enough to have fun but not lose sight of the objective.
Workspace Hygiene
It has been proven by science that cleanliness has a positive effect on our psyche. When we engage in cleaning our homes or workspace, our brain secretes the hormone known as Dopamine, a feel-good hormone. A good boost of dopamine leaves us motivated and eases stress. So when you have a space dedicated to work kept clean and organised, it improves your attitude towards your job and your health overall.
Routine
Well, my staff knows that I am chaotic when it comes to work. I can be a whirlwind but there are things that remain constant in my life. Play time with my son and In-law day. These are moments that also help me wind down. Playing with my boy is all the stress relief I need. Keeps me in the present and appreciative of all that I have.
From experience, these have helped me enjoy what I do and make the most out of it. You can always create a system for yourself, just as long as you know your limits and you are aware of your potential.
