Omo… at the rate that people are making use of the internet today, it should very well be considered a fundamental human right ooo. One way to effectively punish someone, especially if you want to make them dependent on you, is to limit their access to the internet. If you control that, then you just might be able to keep them in check.
The internet is one of the most important assets of the 21st century, and it’s only going to get more important because, with every new innovation that comes, we find ourselves relying even more on the internet. It just might get to a point where cars would not even be able to operate without internet access.
The thing is when it comes to fundamental human rights; the right to life, the right to good food, the right to clothes, and the right to accommodation. Every human being on earth is supposed to get all these things, no matter how bad things are in the country. But then, all that was for an ideal world because in the world we live in today, we’re far from ideal. There are so many people who are homeless, they live on the streets and survive on scraps. Many people go hungry without even knowing where their next meal would come from. Should I talk about the ones that don’t have clothes and have to basically wear rags?
Now, for the internet, it would really be a terrible thing to be without the internet. I know just how frustrating it can be trying to access the internet but failing, knowing that there’s something important you have to do but not being able to go through because there’s just no network. In my house alone, I have a router which I subscribed with a lot of data, I use it for every device in my home that requires the internet. It’s always turned on because it’s always connected to power and when that goes, there’s a standby battery.
But then, I still subscribe on my phone as well. That way, there will always be a way for me to access the internet. If one is acting off, I’ll simply switch without any issues. I’m just saying all this to show you just how important it is to me. I earn a living, thanks to the internet. I entertain myself online. I watch my movies online, and since I got a smart TV, I stopped cable and I’ve never regretted that decision. Except when the network sucks.
For me, making it a human right would be a step in the right direction, but then there will be limits. I agree that kids are very impressionable, and being exposed to the internet at such a young age will do more damage than good. However, limits can be imposed. The way we have age restrictions on driving, drinking, and even some certain movies. We can have age restrictions on the internet. Before you can have free access to the internet, you must be of legal adult age. If not, it will solely be under the supervision of your parent or guardian.
But then, what are we doing? Such a ruling will never be passed. Not when these telecommunication companies are making so much money from the sale of data bundles and paying billions in taxes to the governments. It’s a cash cow, and the internet being what it is, it will never dry out. A gift that will keep on giving.
Well, it’s all good though. At least so far, no one has tried to come and take the internet from us. Maybe when it gets to that point, we’ll see what can be done.
