Omo… I’ve thought about it for quite a while now, and one thing I’ll never really come to terms with is the fact that some people just don’t understand that what works for the goose won’t always work for the gander. It’s just as if they believe that for everyone else, people are either going through the same thing, or things are better for them. It’s always hard to imagine that people are going through worse.
Why is this so? Why have people gotten comfortable with choosing to ignore the fact that as bad as their situations are, there are people who have it way worse? And no matter how good they have it, someone else out there has it way better. That’s just the way of life.
It’s sad that knowing just how tough things are in the country, you’ll look at an age mate and call them lazy simply because they’ve not gotten to the same status that you have. Just because you’ve been able to achieve a number of things and managed to find your feet well before some of your peers, it doesn’t mean you’re smarter or more hardworking than they are.
However, it’s saddening just how many people feel this way. You’ll be shocked by the number. Such people are terrible to be around because they’ll always be toxic to the people that they’re around. They’ll never say something good about you, as long as they believe they’re better than you, they’ll keep talking about how lazy you are and how you’re choosing to remain that way. As if people could just flick a switch and make things better for themselves.
People forget that we all have different lives. Some people will never face any real responsibility until they get married and have kids, before then, they’ll always have only themselves to take care of. However, there are those who even when they’re still living with their parents, are already settling bills that have nothing to do with them. Even when they’re young, they’re already paying school fees and buying books for their younger ones.
You can’t compare these two people. Even if they’re the same age and earning the same amount of money, one may seem like he’s more successful than the other simply because he doesn’t have that many bills. That’s just how it is. You can’t use the circumstances of your own life to judge others. Just because you were able to see yourself through school doesn’t mean that those who still rely on their parents for allowances and all are foolish. You have no idea what they’re going through.
This is why I would never put anyone down. Everything I’ve been able to achieve today, the independence I’ve come to enjoy so much is simply because I had an enabling environment to nurture it. I might never have come this far if things had been slightly different for me. Some people don’t have it this way. Some people have to spend their earnings on issues that have nothing to do with them except maybe blood.
So, unless you know for sure every little thing about the other person, never talk bad about them and put them down. You have no idea where their shoes have been, and if you take a mile in them, then you just might realize how narrow-minded you’ve been.
