One of the perks of being a remote worker that’s no longer a student is the idea of you know, rarely having to go out. And then, if you live in a neighborhood like mine where you can easily buy things without really going too far, you’ll have no reason to ever leave your home. While everyone else would prepare in the morning or at noon to step out of the house and go make some money, you could remain in bed as long as you want and get up when it’s time to hit your computers and start punching out the dollar signs.
This is a sedentary lifestyle that I’m coming to adopt, and do I like it? Hell no! At least in the past, I had school to go to, I didn’t enjoy it but it was a great excuse for me to leave the house on a regular basis. Many times I walked just so that I could stretch my legs and flex my muscles a little bit. But since my graduation, it’s been a little different and I don’t want it.
I don’t want to be a couch potato. I don’t want to be stuck in front of the computer every day, working. I’m not saying that I don’t love my work, of course I do. I’m just saying that I need more reasons or excuses to be able to leave my home because left to me, I’m running out of them.
I go to visit my friends once in a while, but no matter how close we are, there can only be so many times you can visit without overstaying your welcome. I can’t go there every single day, as if my own home is chasing me. I also don’t have something urgent that would always be sure to get me out of the house. And besides, I wish that I could just get out of the house and walk without destination. I want to be able to feel the heat of the sun against my face every once in a while.
So, what have I come up with? So far, it’s just working out that I can think of. This time around, it won’t just be in the comfort of my home. I’ll do it outside, I’ll go into the school to jog or I’d simply do it on the road. At random hours of the day, I’ll simply get up and walk around the compound, sort of reminding my body that I have legs that are meant to still be used.
Believe me, when I tell you this, it can be so easy to forget that sitting in one place for too long can wound you. This is even worse when you don’t have a conducive environment; like maybe your seat is too low or too high, or your desk is too far away. Sitting with a haunch for hours at a time will hurt you in a major way.
It also weakens the body muscles because even walking is a form of exercise and it strengthens the body muscles. Lack of that would be detrimental in the long run. Now, on my own, simply walking around my home and going to the shops around will no longer cut it for me. I have to do something more major, I have to start getting out there. It’s about time I took my health and fitness into my hand.
