Greetings Hive Garden community! We are starting the month of February, if we were a country in the global north I would say that we are close to spring this year, but nothing could be further from the truth because I live in the global south, more specifically in the middle of the Caribbean basin tropics! Therefore, there are only 2 seasons here: Dry season, which is a kind of hellish summer that with this climate change seems to extend the 12 months of the year and rainy season, which is practically confined to the last 3 months of the year. In this context, many of my plants are ferns and others are ornamental plants, but just the last week of January, 2 of them began to bloom and they are the ones I want to share with you in these lines.

Estamos comenzando el mes de febrero, si fuéramos un país del norte global les diría que estamos próximos a la primavera de este año, pero nada más alejado de la realidad porque vivo en el sur global, más específicamente en pleno trópico de la cuenca del Caribe! Por tanto aquí solo existen 2 estaciones: Estación seca que es una especie de verano infernal que con este cambio climático parece extenderse los 12 meses del año y estación lluviosa que prácticamente esta confinada a los últimos 3 meses del año. En este contexto muchas de mis plantas son helechos y otras son plantas ornamentales pero justo la última semana de Enero empezaron a florecer 2 de ellas y son las que quiero compartirte en estas líneas.
Let's start with my Thanksgiving cactus, Christmas cactus or if you're a botanical purist like me Schlumbergera truncata, you have no idea how difficult it is to maintain this plant, its flat stems for some reason I don't understand are something that drives the pigeons that live in my neighborhood crazy and they always come to my window to peck at them! Keeping them away has been hard work, because this plant requires good lighting and the other thing I haven't told you is that this plant can bloom in 4 different colors: Pink, red, purple and white, in my case it has bloomed pink.
Comencemos por mi cactus de acción de gracias, cactus de navidad o si eres un purista botánico como yo Schlumbergera truncata, no se imaginan lo difícil que es mantener esta planta, sus tallos planos por alguna razón que no entiendo son una cosa que para las palomas que viven en mi vecindario las vuelve locas y siempre llegán a mi ventana para picotearlas! Mantenerlas alejadas ha sido un trabajo arduo, porque esta planta requiere de una buena iluminación y lo otro que no le s hé comentado es que esta planta pude florcer con 4 colores diferentes: Rosa, rojo, púrpura y blanco, en mi caso ha floreado rosa.
As you can see the variant I have has pink flowers, my mother is delighted with it but just yesterday coming back from physiotherapy my mother met my mentor and professor of botany and plant physiology, it turns out that my teacher has the white flower variant and my mother is asking me to talk to her so she can give me a shoot of this plant so I can now have white and pink flowers. 🤣🌺🌼
Como pueden ver la variante que tengo es de flores rosa, mi madre esta encantado con ella pero justo ayer volviendo de la fisioterapia mi madre se encontró con mi mentora y profesora de botánica y fisiología vegetal, resulta que mi profesora tiene la variante de flores blancas y mi madre me esta pidiendo que hable con ella para que me de un retoño de esta planta para tener ahora flores blancas y rosa. 🤣 🌺🌼

If it was already remarkable that my Thanksgiving cactus bloomed at this time, it was even more surprising to see my orchid take a bud at the end of January. You see, friends, this flower has a symbolic connotation in my country, it is the national flower and only grows in the coastal mountain ranges in Venezuela, mainly in the east of the country. Getting this species to bloom in the Center, that is, in Caracas, has been a great effort for me in terms of care and knowing how to select the conditions for it to grow and finally bloom.
Si ya era notable que mi cactus de acción de gracias floreciera en estas fechas, más sorprendente fue ver a mi orquídea sacar un capullo a finales de enero. Verán amigos esta flor es tiene una connotación simbólica en mi país, es la flor nacional y solo crece en las cordilleras de la costa en Venezuela principalmente al oriente del país. Lograr que esta especie floreciera en el Centro, es decir en Caracas ha sido un gran esfuerzo para mi de cuidados y de saber seleccionar las condiciones para que creciera y finalmente floreciera.

This May flower or Cattleya mossiae is endemic to the cloud forests of the coastal mountain range. I was given a sapling of this orchid when I was in Las Puertas de Miraflores, a place in the state of Monagas and it is a favorable place where this flower grows preferentially due to its high humidity. Due to its beauty, this orchid flower was part of our banknotes, declaring it the national flower in 1951.
Esta flor de mayo o Cattleya mossiae es endémica de los bosques nublados de la cordillera de la costa, me dieron un retoño de esta orquídea cuando estuve en la Las Puertas de Miraflores un lugar en el estado Monagas y es un lugar propicio donde esta flor crece preferencialmente por su alta humedad. Por su belleza esta flor de orquídea formó parte de nuestros billetes, declarándola flor nacional en 1951.

I had faith that I could grow this orchid for several reasons, the first is that I had already seen these orchids grow on tree trunks in Colinas de Bellomonte in the Eastern Miranda, so living near the Ávila hill, I prepared everything necessary for this orchid to grow and later bloom. First, I got pieces of trunk as a surface for it to grow next to soil that came from Galipán in the Ávila Hill. Throughout the year 2024 this epiphyte established itself but due to the high temperatures of this dry season it did not bloom. Finally, I believe that these last 2 months that were cold and humid created the ideal conditions for the orchid to finally bloom. Tuve fe en que podía hacer crecer esta orquídea por varias razones, la primera es que ya había visto estas orquídeas crecer en los troncos de árboles en Colinas de Bellomonte en el Esto Miranda así que viviendo tan cerca del cerro Ávila preparé todo lo necesario para que esta orquídea pudiera crecer y posteriormente florecer. Primero conseguí trozos de tronco como superficie para que creciera junto a tierra que provenía de Galipán en el Cerro Ávila. Durante todo el año 2024 esta epifita se estableció pero por las altas temperaturas de esta temporada seca no florecía. Finalmente creo que estos últimos 2 meses que fueron fríos y húmedos crearon las condiciones ideales para que finalmente floreciera la orquídea.
