You know, it’s funny to me sometimes how you can search on Netflix for a film you’ve watched a long while back and when you don’t find it, you begin to wonder why. I remembered this film recently because it’s been nearly a decade since I watched it. But I forgot that it had been that long, so it was a huge source of confusion to me when each time I searched, I wouldn’t find it. Either way, I remember this film because it’s one of the most wonderful productions I’ve seen and I thought to share it with you all today.
Lucy (2014)
Released on 25th July, 2014, Lucy is a sci-fi action film written and directed by Luc Besson and shot in major cities like Paris, New York and Taipei. It stars renowned actors like Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Choi Min-Sik, and so on. It had a budget of $40 million and lasts for about an hour and thirty minutes in duration.
Lucy is an American student that studies in Taiwan. She is tricked by her new boyfriend into delivering a briefcase containing four bags of an invaluable synthetic drug to a South Korean drug lord. Unfortunately, after witnessing said boyfriend's death, she is captured and a bag of the synthetic drug sewn into her belly to be transported safely to Europe. However, when she is kicked on said stomach, tearing the bag and releasing its contents into her system, Lucy from then on acquires enhanced abilities, both physical and mental. And as time progresses, her abilities could only get worse…or better.
I remember feeling so hyped when I watched this. I had heard and believed then that humans only utilized only ten percent of their brain’s abilities, which is, of course untrue. But back then, I gulped the theory like water, so when I watched Lucy, my brain was filled with all the possibilities that can be actualized. I wasn’t praying to be punched violently in the belly like Lucy was, but then I kept feeling like it just took one scenario to bring to fruition that whole situation. Lol.
I think Scarlett Johansson was a brilliant actor in this film. I don’t know why I forgot who played Lucy till I saw it recently but I think she embodied the role like she always does. It could be said that she was over acting in some parts but it can only be anticipated with the way her consciousness was constantly developing and that too at a rapid rate.
Also, I loved the role that Morgan Freeman played as the professor and leading scientist. Watching him talk about all the things that was supposed to happen to Lucy because of the drug and then watching it happen were pretty beautiful moments for me. There was the violence bit that was a lot, but it was an exposition on human abilities and just how far it can go, so even though it was a tad stretched, a usual scaredy cat like me was still enthralled and I couldn’t miss out on the film because of that. The cinematography was great, and properly utilized for a movie genre that is action-adventure.
Lucy, however, has been criticized by some people due to the chronic exaggerations at some points and that at the end of it all, it seems to lack a purpose. I can attest to the possibility of this being true but it’s still a great story nonetheless, and making over ten times its budget is a testament to that. And I just might rewatch it because it has been a minute and the film is visually and aesthetically pleasing on all grounds. Have you seen this film before? What do you think?
