Films where you feel all the while that something is wrong, but then when it happens, it still takes you for a pleasant surprise would always be a delightful treat to me. So, when I thought of sci-fi film productions that I watched recently but I enjoyed, I thought of this one. I called this recent because even though it was released way back in 2016, I only watched it last year or thereabout. So, without further ado, I’ll walk us through it.
The 5th Wave
Directed by J Blakeson, the film tells the story of an alien spaceship with extra-terrestrial life known as The Others landing on earth. Ten days later, it launches its first wave on earth. The 1st wave is an electromagnetic pulse that causes the disabling of all electrical power and communications all over the world and shuts off the engines of all moving vehicles, including flights, in mid-air.
The 2nd wave is the manipulation of earth’s weather and geology, causing natural disasters like earthquakes and mega tsunamis to sweep the earth. Our protagonist, Cassie is only able to escape with her little brother by climbing a tree. The 3rd wave is the spread of a deadly influenza-like disease that claims hundreds of thousands of lives, Cassie’s mother included. The 4th wave is the possession of humans by the extra-terrestrial beings causing them to kill each other.
At this point, everyone is in panic. What is the 5th wave which is supposed to be the deadliest wave of all, be like. For some time, it feels like nothing is happening, yet the citizens are filled with trepidation. But then, the calvary in form of a swarm of military officials arrive and pledge to make everything better, and so they begin evacuation, with major priority being on the children. Can they stop the 5th wave?
I just kept watching this in the beginning, filling myself with the details and taking in all the destruction. It wasn’t until the evacuation that things truly began to get interesting. Seeing that gigantic egg-like object sitting in the middle of the earth contributed to a lot of the tension in the film. I really wanted to see what exactly was happening there, but throughout the duration of the movie, it just sat there and oozed doom instead.
And I loved the characters. Bringing Chloe Moretz and Nick Robinson was a genius move and I’ve always been a fan of their acting. I saw a lot of criticisms to this movie that made it seem that the film was just about them and not the proper representation of their characters in the film, but I’m not quite sure I subscribe to that theory.
My only reservation to this movie was the somewhat underwhelming experience I felt concerning the much talked about 5th wave, and even though it left me a little open-mouthed at the twists, I was certainly expecting more, and it felt like there should have been something more or maybe a part two just to clear up all of that up, and give the audience more of what we were looking for. It’s like expecting fries with egg sauce but you’re given just yam with fried egg. Both still delicious choices, but the former holds far more appeal.
I figured out that this was coined from a book, and a lot of people have mixed reviews on whether or not the movie is better than the book. I haven’t read the book before, but if it’s anything like the movie or even better, then it must surely be a masterpiece. Would probably not be so excited if I were to see this production now, but I enjoyed it a lot then, which is why it’s making its way here today. Hope you enjoy!
