At what point did I go from being a reader to a book repairman?
Here's what happened
A few months ago a friend lent me the book "Montevideanos" by Mario Benedetti, belonging to the Latin American literature collection of the Casa de las Américas publishing house. At first I was surprised because this book was printed in 1968 and, although the owner takes great care of it, it has already passed through more than a generation of readers, so its deterioration was noticeable. I also tried to be very careful while reading, but as the years go by, the book's cover came off and it was starting to come off in the middle too. Then I said to myself: I am obliged to fix it, and maybe another couple of generations will also be able to read it in physical.
In a few minutes I gathered all the materials I would need: cardboard, colored paper, scissors, glue and my card case with other school supplies. And so, without any experience trying to repair books, I started my work.
First I took the measurement of the thickness of the book to try to strengthen the spine. I cut out a piece of cardboard with those dimensions, a material that I chose because it is resistant and flexible at the same time. With great care I started gluing it and in a matter of minutes it was practically ready. It was very funny to me because only with this step the book seemed like new, however I took other measures to improve my work.
The rest of the cover was already glued since the day before. Then I took the liberty of cutting out a piece of purple colored paper that somehow matches the original color of the book. I also chose this paper because it was more resistant than others that I had available. I added a small space to the thickness of the book so that it covered all that side well and I cut out the paper with the new dimensions. I think that creating this piece was the most difficult part of the process and the one in which I had to be more careful...
I confirmed that each edge was well fixed and with the help of my hands I dedicated myself to flattening the pieces. In the end I was very pleased with the result, and I hope the same thing happens to my friend as soon as I deliver the book 😅. Through this simple experience I could notice that with love and commitment we can always create and renew wonderful things. And you, have you ever done a job like this?

¿En qué momento pasé de ser lector a ser reparador de libros?
He aquí lo que sucedió
Hace unos meses una amiga me prestó el libro "Montevideanos" de Mario Benedetti, perteneciente a la colección de literatura latinoamericana de la editorial Casa de las Américas. Al principio quedé sorprendido porque este libro fue impreso en 1968 y, aunque la dueña lo cuida con esmero ya ha pasado por más de una generación de lectores, por tanto se notaba su deterioro. Igualmente traté de tener sumo cuidado mientras leía, pero como el paso de los años es más fuerte al libro se le desprendió la cubierta y comenzaba a desprenderse por el centro. Entonces me dije a mí mismo: estoy en la obligación de arreglarlo, y quizás otro par de generaciones más también podrán leerlo en físico.
En pocos minutos reuní todos los materiales que necesitaría: cartón, papel de color, tijeras, pegamento y mi cartuchera con otros materiales escolares. Y así, sin ningún tipo de experiencia tratando de reparar libros, comencé mis labores.
Primero tomé la medida del grosor del libro para intentar reforzar el lomo. Recorté un pedazo de cartón con esas dimensiones, material que escogí por ser resistente y a la vez flexible. Con mucho cuidado comencé a pegarlo y en cuestión de minutos estaba prácticamente listo. Me dió mucha gracia porque solo con este paso el libro parecía como nuevo, no obstante tomé otras medidas para mejorar mi trabajo.
El resto de la cubierta ya estaba pegada desde el día anterior. Entonces me tomé la libertad de recortar un pedazo de papel de color morado que de alguna forma combina con el color original del libro. Este papel también lo elegí por ser más resistente que otros que tenía disponible. Al grosor del libro le sumé un pequeño espacio para que cubriera bien todo ese lado y recorté el papel con las nuevas dimensiones. Creo que oegar esta pieza fue la parte más difícil del proceso y en la que tuve que ser más cuidadoso...
Confirmé que cada borde quedara bien fijado y con ayuda de mis manos me dediqué a aplanar las piezas. Al final quedé muy a gusto con el resultado, y espero que a mi amiga le ocurra lo mismo en cuanto entregue el libro 😅. A través de esta experiencia sencilla pude notar que con amor y empeño siempre podemos crear y renovar cosas maravillosas. Y tú, ¿alguna vez has hecho un trabajo como este?
