Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to talk about how consistency has really been a good but surprising thing for me!
The Third
Consistency is key - 3 years for me!
When I first joined Hive, formerly Steem, one of the things I tried to do several times but could never quite make it happen is to get a posting streak going. It would start a few days and then fizzle out for one reason or another. I was really annoyed by that because I thought I was pretty good at doing something consistently, but apparently I wasn't. That frustration built for several years, and eventually one year a few years ago, I said fuck it and I really dug my heels in!
December 27th 2021 was the day that I seemingly chose to START the posting journey of doing it daily. I wanted to get to weekly just because. Then once I hit weekly, I wanted to get to monthly.. and then I wanted to do 3 months. Eventually it grew from there and I think the important thing is that I learned a lot over the time in the journey. One of the most important things that I learned is that I had my own style and way of doing this posting thing.
I was trying hard to be like the KP Bros, Galen and Taraz, and writing something every day to publish it. That was really a good thing to strive to do, but for me it wasn't practical and it wasn't really possible. I soon figured out that I wasn't going to be able to do that type of thing, and that was okay. I figured out post scheduling a while back, but rarely used it. Post scheduling is what really did it for me though, in terms of being able to generate content at a consistent rate and get it published to the chain in a daily fashion! That was my secret sauce.
Fast forward months, I was on a good streak. I was enjoying it quite a bit, as I was learning a lot about myself and my mental state. I was feeling better being able to write when I was and that was a good thing. We all need ways in order for us to get some mental clarity and benefits, in a world that is pretty hostile in a lot of ways, particularly to men.
Fast forward a while.. and just the other day I crossed 3 years of posting daily! I thought I had already crossed 3 years.. but Hive Buzz corrected me on that :D I started this fun journey 1 year before Hive Buzz came out with the yearly badge, so I have 2 yearly badges and 1 year without it. Making 3 years, but damn does time fly! I know that I certainly appreciate the ability I have to sit down a few nights a week and get my thoughts out that I come up with during the days and nights that I am not writing posts.
There is certainly opportunity cost associated with all of this - where I am sacrificing my sleep in order to do this, but at the same time we have to do something like this otherwise we will fall into a different hole. I would much rather spend this time on Hive instead of watching videos or something that I am purely the consumer instead of a combination of creator plus consumer. That is for sure a mindset shift!
I was talking with someone the other day about how much longer I will keep it up. I have certainly pondered letting the streak lapse when I'm on vacation or something, but I don't have a great reason why I would do that. I appreciate the time spent doing this, and have the ability to do it so I will keep on doing it. Perhaps when my son gets older and doesn't go to bed at 7pm every night, maybe that's when I would stop? You never know, and that's a few years away at least so there's no sense in trying to come up with weird scenarios and I will just appreciate what I'm doing, and keep it going for as long as I can!
What about you, do you try to post daily? Have you gotten a good streak going? Let me know what your strategy is in the comments!
