A couple of weeks ago I sat down and watched the first part of Horizon of which there will be 4 in total and these are not just full length feature films, but each saga is a mammoth watch. The first episode is 181 minutes with part two being 164 minutes. They are currently filming part 3 and whether there will be a part 4 or not that is still up in the air.
Horizon was Kevin Costner's long term dream he has had since filming Dances With Wolves telling the story of America. If you liked Dances With Wolves then I dare say you will enjoy this as there has been nothing like it since. I enjoy a decent Western or an historical film portraying the past and I take my hat off to Costner for following through with this.
Part One covers 4 separate story lines which are the Horizon settlement, a wagon train heading West, an army cavalry town plus a mining town in Montana. There is plenty of Cowboy and Indian style shootouts throughout as this is the Wild West. It may seem like the story line jumps around a bit but there are 4 stories being told and I expect they may possibly overlap with Costner visiting each story.
Costner takes his time to make his appearance and shows up at the mining town in Montana. The time period is set in 1859-1865 so part 2 should start to reveal the effects of the Civil War.
Horizon has not had an easy time at the Box Office and Pat 1 struggled earning just on $25 million. Costner sacrificed the series Yellowstone and has invested over $130 million of his own cash to make this happen. Maybe it is the timing not being right after reading some reviews with the woke audience I kid you not complaining about the Red Indians being shot by white men. This is history which cannot be changed so telling a story as it is should not be offensive, but more educational.
Having watched the first part at home on my television for free this is not a film I would go to cinema and sit and watch for 3 hours. This for me should be on a site like Netflix or Amazon which is where I think it will eventually end up. Costner will eventually make his investment back but t from the Box Office. When Horizon had it's first screening at the Cannes Film Festival it received an 11 minute standing ovation.
There ae going to be those for and against this American Saga and I am definitely in favor of this and I will definitely watch all of them. These days there is so much low quality rubbish being produced it makes a change to have an historical film. I doubt if Horizon would have been made if Costner did not front the bill as this is not the narrative being pushed today.
Do yourselves a favor and ignore any review you may have read and sit down and watch the first part and judge for yourselves. I found this on my smart television using the Cyberflix App.
