Blue Skies and other Jazz

Greetings and salutations Hivers. Today let's go into another Three Tune Tuesday post.

As always, thanks to @ablaze for making this series. Lots of people participate in it! Follow the tags to find a ton of good music recommendation.

Today, well, I started with a song that was stuck in my head and I went from there, playing it by ear, as the idiomatic phrase goes, which is fitting because the songs are jazz.

That intro out of the way, let's just jump in and see where this leads us.

Diana Krall - Blue Skies

Why was this song on my mind... I don't know. Of course it's a very classic tune. Written by Irving Berlin in 1926, it was immediately a hit and has remained one, being covered by almost everyone in the years since, probably most notably by Ella Fitzgerald. It's lyrically a very optimistic song, but the minor key gives the words a bit of a sad feeling, making the message either ironic or confusing. That uncertainty may be part of the reason for the enduring popularity of the song.

Diana Krall's version is an interesting interpretation of the song. See what you think.

All of Me

Here is an amateur group performing another jazz classic, All of Me. Written in 1931 by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons, like the above this one has long since become a classic and is covered by pretty much everyone.

After listening to the above, I was in the mood for another classic, and this fit that bill.

And now for something completely different....

J-Music Pocket Band - Corridors of Time

Having listened to the previous, a theme from a song appeared in my head. I didn't know what it was at first, but humming it a few times I could expand it each time until I figured out what it was. This is a mellow jazz piece from a great old SNES game called Chrono Trigger. See what you think.

So what's your favorite?

I love Diana Krall. She is just so amazing. I also like Shelby Lynne a lot, but they are a bit different in terms of style. I haven' listened to Krall in a while, I need to change that!

Absolutely. Diana Krall is always good to listen to!

Finally, a #ttt post that gives jazz a little chance. A source of pleasure.
Maybe next time you'll concentrate on just one artist and show us the whole spectrum. Diana Krall surely deserves it. 😉

SOmetimes I do focus on one artist, and sometimes I skip around. We'll see what kind of mood I'm in next week. Anyway, I very often cover jazz as my pick, usually Japanese jazz, so if you like this genre, be sure to turn back in the future.

They first two are amazing standards. Believe it or not, I have always found Blue Skies a tad depressing. I feel like the singer has been going through a very bad time and is desperately trying to get out of a funk, but is in reality still in a funk. De Nile is the first to drowning. LOL. I am probably just projecting. The coffee hasn't' quite set in. So I guess I prefer All of Me ... for it audacity of message.

The jam at the end was superb. Still listening. Are you one of the players. I miss Japan for this kind of energy. People work so hard; they really know how to relax.

I think that's just it. The minor key gives it that feeling of slight depression. It feels more like the singer is trying to convince themselves of the message they are singing.

Though I have played in a swing jazz band at one point in my life, no I'm not in that last video. I'd love to play with those guys though. They do a great job!
