I would say back then, the artist who sang, didn't just sing because of the pay and the fame or awards that come with it, because I guess it was quite difficult getting noticed back then, than it is now, so most of them went into music back then because it was a passion, and a way of expressing their thoughts, life, experiences and words without having people judge them. Music in the 90s wasn't noise, wasn't just saying foul words, it was a way of expression, and back then, many could attest to having such experience or going on in their lives unlike now.
I remember when we were quite young, and in a bid to know a particular song, we would buy a book that contained all the lyrics of the song for an amount, and during our free period, we would always read the lyrics to memorize them and whenever a station plays the song, we will get the book and start singing along. It was always fun back then, that we didn't mind spending our lunch money to buy these books that contain most sing lyrics that we needed to learn.
If I were to be a GenZ, just maybe I would have preferred the NOW or recent songs but unfortunately, fortunately, I am not a GenZ, I narrowly escaped being a GenZ and earnestly I feel that not just in music but in all ramifications, they will and have missed a whole lot. Most of the Recent music, I am opportune to listen to or have an idea about, especially the Now or recent songs, except for the Blues or RnB, have nothing other than noise and have no depth. I am not castigating the now artist, of course, that's their niche, but I feel the NOW songs are lousy, and most are filled with naked girls and boys just jumping around.
They now focus more on bringing a particular dance, than giving songs that will keep being alive and go through the test of time. The last time I was in a wedding reception, I guess the couples decided that they were going to be doing the old songs because the DJ specifically gave us the old songs and the crowd was in uproar and dancing not just to the rhythm but singing along. I was elated to sing along and dance according to the dance style. It showed that the songs from the 90s will always ring a bell in our ears and will take an upper place than the new songs. I saw people vibe to these olden songs and it gave them so much joy than the NOW song would have.

Most times, when I am opportune to listen to the NOW songs we have flying around, I always wonder how people take their time to listen to them and even go as far as memorizing them, for one, do not even have the time to listen to them, even if I am asked, I do not know any recent or trending sings, except my siblings or someone close who loves playing the songs continuously play it around me but even at that, I am not invested in knowing them because it does not interest me, their lyrics are nothing to write home about.
If I know the recent songs, It is an unconscious act, because it is played everywhere, and around me, so by the mere fact that I am surrounded by people who listen to them, my subconscious picks the lyrics and stores them, along the line, I tend to sing along, not because I made a conscious effort to learn it but because it is constantly played around me and my subconscious had picked on it several time.
Regardless of the change and the world's evolving, I will pick and prefer songs from the '90s because their vibes are a whole lot and on another level that the recent songs can not match or compare. I would say this, there is no need or room for comparison, because they do not hit the point of comparison.
It does not mean, the Recent songs are not doing well, they are doing their best, based on the century we are in, but the songs from the 90s if we have to do the comparison thingy, they don't have a place, they are far behind and would need to put in more efforts to be able to get to the stage the songs from the 90s are in. I want our old-time religion. Lol
