The Bad Side Of Forgetfulness
The human mind and brain are very busy parts of the body. 24/7 they are on the run trying to process one thing or the other. With such engagement, it is natural for us to malfunction at some point.
I remember those days while I was in highschool, whenever our teachers asked a question on what we have been taught and we failed to provide the needed answers we got punished and that spurred us to look for ways to tackle the forgetfulness inorder to avoid punishment.
It is very easy to forget things that you are not focused on. The human mind is a busy world, there are so many things going on in there, as a result only things that keep appearing on it become relevant and remain bold while those whose emphasis is not made on it tend to be forgotten.
It's very normal to forget things, it happens to all of us, although it's bad when it becomes a habit. But even at that it is not a death sentence because our system is designed to adapt to any condition we continue to present to it over time, so if we are able to work on it, it will be corrected.
One of the times I had an experience with forgetting a task deputed to me was some months ago.
My mom harvested the okra she farmed and considering how hard the majority of them were, she decided to cut them into smaller portions and dry it. It's another way of preserving okra down here, I don't know about other places. When it becomes fully dried, it is pounded into powder and used for soup.
So, while the okra was still fresh, my mom was assigned a task in the church which would take about four days. Before she left for the task, she instructed me to ensure that the okra was dried because it was the rainy season and there is a tendency for it to spoil.
Unfortunately, the next day after she left, I don't know what happened, I totally forgot about the okra. Though I was busy with work online, so I won't say it was deliberate. The funniest part is I entered the store to get food stuff during that period often but the okra seemed to be totally out of sight to me.
After the program, my mom returned home only for her to check the store and see the okra all covered by fungi. She was so pissed off. All her effort in cultivating the okra, harvesting and even cutting it went in vain.
Although she wasn't so harsh on me over the incident, I felt bad about it. I felt really disappointed, that would have spared us from buying that same powder from the market to make soup but my carelessness has ruined it.
I am just surprised that for four good days, I couldn't remember anything about the okra and I went into the room during those days.
Way Out
Solving forgetfulness is not difficult and it's not easy, it depends on the individual. The method that works most for me in combating forgetting things is being conscious of those very tasks I have.
I achieve that sometimes through constantly memorizing that very thing or writing it down on a piece of paper and keeping it on my table. Whenever I come around that area and catch sight of it, I quickly remember it and execute the action.
