karwar is a coastal city in northwest karnataka, not far from the goa border. i took this series from the bus stand on our travels home from gokarna earlier this year. while karwar is a small city for india it was the biggest we passed through on our journey.
karwar is not a historic city. it was mostly developed by the british. though it has one of the best natural ports on the west coast of india it has not been developed as many of the better known cities of karnataka. while i think part of the reason for this is the lack of history as a center, there are also cultural differences between the local people and the rest of the state. historically the local language is konkani which is in a completely different language family than kannada. the cultural ties were closer to goa but because karwar was under british control it was included as part of india when india became independent at that time goa remained a colony of portugal.
anyway the point of this is the city and district of karwar have long been neglected and this is clearly visible even when just passing through the place. this series of photos does not attempt to focus on that aspect in particular but it does make its presence known
i took all these shots with my S22 phone. they have been edited and converted to black and white on the phone itself
