The Neighbor Next Door.

Having a neighbor can be a curse or blessing, no matter how good or bad the neighbor is. Sometimes, your good neighbor turns out to be the worst thing that happened to you in a day, and it could be that bad neighbor whom you have always despised playing the hero of the day to you, but most importantly, it is better to have a neighbor you can always rely on.

Why am I saying this? I will tell you some funny things that have happened between my family and our neighbor.

We have a family of 5 living next door to us, a dad and mom with 3 lovely girls. The oldest among the girls should be 14 or 13 years old. The young mom was very jovial and friendly, which my mom and sister didn't like because she was always talking with my dad.

One day, I walked in on my mom and sister talking about her: "She will not kneel to greet her husband o, Why is she always kneeling down to greet my husband?"

"Women" was the first thing that came to my mind. Well, my dad is the landlord of the apartment they stay in, and my dad is hardly home (once a week, man). She was very respectful, and I saw no bad blood in what she was doing. After I tried to talk some reasons with my mom and sisters, my sisters fired me back. "You will not understand; you are a man. You can't know women and their tricks. This and that."

They talked like they were going to kill her when next they saw her, but guess who was running up and down when our neighbor got sick? That was my sister, and the woman giving out all the chicken in the pot to make sure this neighbor was feeding well was my mom.

Another thing about our neighbor that always surprises me, which I can't blame them for, is always sending the lastborn to get salt from us. A very small girl with a tiny voice to come get salt. I love one thing about this young girl, and that is her boldness. She would knock and request the salt like it was her right. I always wonder why their salt always finishes and not the maggie.

"Knock Knock" After opening the door and seeing this tiny figure in front of my door, the next word would be, "My mommy says you should gimme salt."

I would look at her, and she would raise her head up to look back at me. Cute and daring would stand there until I brought the salt to her. I am not mad at them for always coming to lend salt; all fingers are not equal is always the first thought in my mind when such a thing happens.

Then the neighbor living in the next building to the right would always come to tell me our plant was mature for harvesting. Sometimes, I don't know if this man knows that I know the plantain is mature for harvesting and I decided to leave it because I have enough in the store already, or does it wants some. Is he doing it from the goodwill of his heart? I decided to cut some plantains for him, and he collected them without hesitating.

I would have loved him to come straight if he wanted some, but tricks like that don't work on me. The next time he came to give me the report, I told him I knew about it and I was the one who left it like that.

Well, like I said in the beginning. Having neighbors is a good sport because you all tend to rely on each other so that life can be beautiful. Thanks for reading.

Haha cute and daring indeed, we do have a neighbor like that too. Sending their little ones to come ask for help instead of coming themselves but I also think it's okay to an extent.

The second neighbour though, that's a funny and too obvious trick 😅

hahahah, Yeah. I feel the mom should come and ask than sending her kids. I feel its a bad way of training, can't say much about it cause I know little about training kids.

For the other man, oh please. I am not giving him my plantain again.

It’s fascinating how the same people we might find frustrating in one moment can become the ones we depend on in times of need. It reminds me that no matter how small the gestures—lending salt or checking on the plantains—there’s always a silent bond that ties neighbors together. Life has a funny way of bringing out kindness, even when we least expect it, and that’s what makes living in a community so special. Thank you for sharing this heartfelt reflection!
