The Benefits of a Large Family: A Personal Perspective

Reflecting on my experiences within my small family unit, I observe the stark differences in familial dynamics. My mother gave birth to two children, and currently, the financial responsibilities rest solely on my shoulders, with only me working. This situation breeds a feeling of envy when I consider my cousin's family, which boasts six siblings. In their case, sharing and contributing to the household burdens is simplified due to their numbers.

My Dad is polygamous, so I have step-siblings. Among the wives, my mother gave birth to two children while the other two wives gave birth to multiple children. Despite having the same father, I used to envy them because they work hand in hand. When Dad died, the reality of having one sibling dawned on me because, in terms of financial responsibility, I bear it all alone with no support. I had no choice but to seek help from my step-siblings when my mother was sick, and it required a lot of money. When the money was shared among step-siblings, the relief that came afterward was the best in my life, and I considered having a larger family is better than having a smaller family.

While having a large family may seem optimal if financial limitations are not a concern, it prompts the question: how do larger families manage a large family? Before I started my motherhood journey, I dreamt of having four to five children, believing it would bring abundance and joy. However, the realities of pregnancy and child-rearing quickly proved that this journey is not for the faint-hearted. I found myself reevaluating my dreams and settling on the decision to have only two children, as the financial and emotional investments required are significant. It is not for the weak!

What are the perks of having a larger family?

  • A large family can share financial responsibilities with ease, thereby reducing individual burdens that can be overwhelming in smaller families. Talking from experience.

  • A larger family fosters deep connections, providing emotional support and enhancing the sense of belonging among family members. This network becomes crucial in times of need. When my mother had surgery that required a lot of money, I saw no one other than my step-siblings.

  • A large family creates a fun and lively environment for one to live. The atmosphere of a larger family is often filled with laughter and activity, creating a vibrant environment that leads to cherished lifelong memories. The joy of shared experiences can enrich family life.

  • A larger family provides a built-in social network, offering various activities and companionships at home. This support system ensures that there is always someone to lean on, making life's challenges more manageable.

  • A large family is the sweetest during festive periods and also during family functions. The shared responsibilities, activities, and joyous atmosphere generate a lifelong memory.

Would I consider a larger family if money isn't involved?

If money is not involved, I will consider a larger family. Despite my current circumstances in a smaller family, I harbor a preference for the dynamic nature of a large family with its multitude of benefits. The shared responsibilities, emotional connections, teamwork, joyous atmosphere, and built-in support systems are attributes I deeply value. A large family not only makes things easier in many respects but also enriches life in countless ways.
It's so unfortunate now that prices of things are so high especially baby things, having a larger family in this kind of economy needs a thorough consideration

Omo even though I disagree with you, I can't help but see this in a new light.

The only problem is while each children are still young, they'll need huge resources to cater for their needs, which can be draining for the parents.

Yes, you are right.
Taking them to the university level can be draining truly but the joy at the end is superb👍

I reasoned with you and you have made your valid point. Actually I never like a large family but you have proven yourself and you've also succeeded in opening my eyes to certain however I don't intend to have a large family.

If money isn't involved, a larger family is the best

A large family can share financial responsibilities with ease, thereby reducing individual burdens that can be overwhelming in smaller families. Talking from experience.

Hahaha. I can relate too. In the aspect of my aunts and uncles, it's a whole lot when it is just 2 people shouldering the responsibility financially while the other 3 aren't working, they still expect from the 2. So much. But with my siblings and I, we are 3 helping each other to relieve the burden financially and we are waiting for the other 2 siblings to finish school so they can join us in easing the burden.

When money isn't involved, trust me, having a larger family is always fun and great especially when things are done in love and unity.

Very draining 👍 It's a burden I'm facing right now. I need a large family biko

Hahaha 😀

Having a large family is wonderful because of the shared teamwork and shoulder to lean on. If money isn't involved, I would love to have large family because having a large famiky is fun especially when doing things together with love.

Yes dear👍
Thanks for agreeing with me
