It was my birthday in 2011, then my fiancee, now my husband, had a surprise for me with friends. I met him at a bar with some of his friends and a bosom friend; it was well planned out to the point of seeing my friend, who was a busy type on that very day. It was fun with lots of goodies, he knew I don't take alcohol at all. My friend and I had soft drinks.
One of his friends, Tunde (aka Reuben), who was a very funny guy among his friends, got into an argument with someone about his ability to drink heavily. Despite being a non-drinker, Reuben claimed he could outdrink anyone. This led to a bet: if he could consume seven bottles of Smirnoff Ice, he would win twenty thousand naira.
At the bar, Reuben and his challenger started drinking, while the rest of us enjoyed our own drinks. By the fifth bottle, Reuben was already tipsy and arguing violently. When the bartender ran out of Smirnoff, Reuben insisted on continuing with Small Stout, which worried me. His behavior became increasingly erratic, and I tried to persuade him to stop drinking, but he refused.
After finishing half of the seventh bottle (Big Stout), we decided to leave. Reuben was barely coherent and started praying like a pastor, saying "In Jesus' Name" despite being a Muslim. Our designated driver took us home, but Reuben got out of the car and stood in the middle of the road, almost getting hit by a vehicle. I was scared by his behavior, then my fiancee pushed him to safety, and we decided to head to his house to put him to sleep.
Before leaving, he was showered, and Reuben got into a heated argument with another friend, Kunle. Reuben came out of the bathroom naked, and forgotten ladies were around, he was ready to fight Kunle. We eventually got him to his bed, where he continued ranting and threatening Kunle.
On his bed, Reuben started vomiting, and I managed to clean him up and put him to bed. The next morning, we laughed about the experience and warned Reuben not to try such a thing again. He claimed he passed the challenge and demanded the twenty thousand naira but later admitted he would never drink alcohol again.
The events of that night were a testament to the dangers of excessive drinking and the importance of knowing one's limits. Reuben's decision to participate in the bet, despite being a non-drinker, led to a series of unfortunate events that could have ended in disaster. His behavior became increasingly erratic, and he lost control, leading to dangerous situations.
The experience also centered on the importance of looking out for one another. My fiancee took responsibility for ensuring Reuben's safety, even when others didn't seem to care. His actions likely prevented things from getting even worse. Why do what you are not capable of? it is wrong to prove a point when there's no point👌
In the end, we all learned a valuable lesson about the dangers of excessive drinking and the importance of being mindful of our actions. We should be conscious of what we consume and avoid doing things we're not capable of. The experience was entertaining, but my birthday could have turned into something else if we weren't careful.
