Urinary Tract Issues

in #hive-14008410 days ago

Well, this isn't fun. For about a year now, I've had some intermittent urinary tract issues; none which occurred for the 32 years prior. Stress might be a factor which is contributing to the symptoms, and I have been considerably stressed lately. I strongly want to believe this is the primary cause.

Without going into too much detail... now I'm going on a 2nd round of antibiotics and some prostate medications, with a more restrictive diet (I already eat healthy, but some of the foods I like, particularly spicy ones, tomatoes, onions, vinegar, etc., can sometimes exacerbate symptoms if the source is the bladder; I already avoid the unhealthy ones that can exacerbate such symptoms).

Due to a possible reduction in efficacy of the antibiotics, I'm also pausing a supplement I take for my depressive symptoms. The urologist and physician assistant forgot to tell me to pause it, but I'm careful about ensuring that I take things properly.

Right now, it feels like everything is being taken away - my family's health, my health, my hobbies, and now the healthy foods I like. There's not much left in life that I'm enjoying right now. I'm sort of depleted, guys. It's not good.

I'm going along with these changes for now, anticipating that the symptoms will again improve. Hopefully this is only going to be a temporary change for me, and I'll be able to return to my prior diet soon. A few of these foods are just not something I'd want to give up forever. I'm willing to reduce how much and how often I eat them, but not give them up completely.

Fingers crossed. As long as my symptoms reduce, I can eat close to how I'm currently eating, and I can get off of these medications, I'll thank my lucky stars. I hope that's not too much to ask for...

Stress, which you have been experiencing, makes us more prone to getting sick or for chronic conditions to manifest themselves.

There is something that helps me sometimes that is a concept from stoic philosophy -
" Some things are in our control and others not." - when we agonize other things not in our control we can do ourselves much harm.

💯

Short bursts of stress are known to have positive effects on the body; chronic, low-grade stress, on the other hand, has significantly deleterious effects.

The aspect of stoicism that you've pointed out is something I've been telling myself for years, even before I heard of the philosophy! However, evidently, I haven't taken that phrase to heart.

I've briefly read about the stoic philosophy in the past. I greatly respect the concept. It would require some significant changes to some of my core beliefs - because I'm the type of person who tends to care too much. I don't want to completely lose my empathy, as this is a value which I hold dear, and one which enhances me in my career. It would be great if I could reconcile both stoicism and empathy.

For the time being, I'll continue working on meditation. This is something which I think will help me handle my stress better.

Finishing residency is also going to be very important - that great stressor will be gone from my life!

I'm definitely not fully stoic, detachment from somethings is good, but not at the expense of empathy.

I hope you get better soon and you can enjoy all of the things you are missing out now

Thank you! 🙏

A gradual return back to normality would be amazing. I have to believe that it will happen.

Keeping hope up, you are inspiring ❤️
