In the past few weeks I've been quite busy celebrating my holiday, so I kind of neglected the Cycling Community a bit. Therefore, I offer my humble apologies. But, I'm back again and full of energy!
To make it up a little I'm sharing a blogpost for which I already had taken some photos before my holiday.
As you all should know by now is that The Netherlands is the country for cyclists. I've made a couple of posts about that before.
With 1.3 bicyles per inhabitant our country has a very high bicycle density.
Dutchies, as we sometimes call ourselves use their bicycles a lot. We go to school, the supermarket and even commuting. And when the office is a bit further away we ride our bicycle to the nearest railway station and continue from there by train (there are also a lot of people going to work by car, but also a lot by bike).
The following photo shows a covered bicycle rack near a rather small train station in a suburb of The Hague. But as you can see it is full of bicycles.
Around the station are even some other, smaller bicycle racks. It's fun to walk along those bicycle racks to see what bicycles people are riding.
Although I'm questioning myself if some of this bicycles are still in use. For example, this bike was missing a saddle. I don't think it's really comfortable riding this bicycle.
Next to it was another bicycle that probably was left there for a while. It was all covered in rust. In some municipalities, abandoned bicycles are labeled and periodically removed.
This rack had quite some old bicycles. I also spotted this bicycle with another one on top.
There's also a new company that is leasing bicyles. These so-called swap bikes can be recognized by their distinctive blue bicycle tire.
For a certain amount per month you can lease a fully functioning bicycle. With working brakes and lights. When something is wrong with your bicycles you just call the company and they come to pick it up and swapp it for another one.
Especially in cities you see a lot of these bicycles, mainly used by students that cannot afford to buy a new bicycle, but can ride a good bicycle this way. Students also get a discount.
In the bigger cities there are also bigger bicycle parkings. Here is one of a few that are close to a large station in the city of Leiden. All these parkings offer space for thousands of bicycles. This underground parking has security, but parking your bicycle here is free.
Here is a view from the inside. You can see the large amount of bicycles in the parking. Because this photo was taken when the school summer holidays had already begun you see some empty spots. But outside of the holiday season, it is completely full.
And when it's completely full, how can you find your own bike among the thousands of other bicycles? You decorate it with some accessories like this seat cover with panther print or some fake flowers.
I once forgot where I had placed my bicycle and it took me 30 minutes to find it again. After that I have installed bright green quick-release straps on my bike.
I hope you have gotten a bit of an idea about bicycle parking facilities in the Netherlands.
