The topic I must write 1,000 words on is: "If you could instantly learn a skill, which one would you choose?"
Why this choice?
Woodworking is an ancestral and timeless skill. We have always worked with wood: to create tools, make fire, build houses, etc. Wood is one of the resources that has shaped us the most.
Even when a tree dies and falls to the ground, it continues to bring life around it. If you walk in the forest, you will inevitably find dead wood. Try lifting a branch or a piece of bark. You will quickly realize that there is a whole world living inside. Many species depend on dead trees.
But that’s not all. Beyond the environmental aspect, I have always seen my grandfather working with wood. Now that he is at the end of his life, I want to follow in his footsteps. When I was a child and went on vacation to his place, we regularly built things out of wood:
- Toys (cars, a train, animals),
- Furniture (cabinets, chairs, tables),
- Objects (brooms, spoons, and other kitchen utensils).
I saw him, he did a lot of work using wood. Notably, an entire outdoor garage to store the car, tools, and wood. In this garage, there was an upper level that he also built himself, in wood. I was never really allowed to go up there because my grandmother didn’t want me to. To get up there, there was no staircase, and you either had to take out a ladder or climb on some furniture. I often broke the rules to go up.
Very young, I was allowed to have a knife. Many people might say that it’s crazy to give a knife to a child. I would say that it depends on the education you give afterward. Yes, there is a high chance that a child with a knife will cut themselves, but there is very little chance that it will be fatal for them or anyone else. On the other hand, give a child a screen too early, and the damage to the brain will be much worse.
With this knife in my pocket, when I went for walks with my grandfather, I had fun carving branches, simply to shape them into a point. He said that there was no better activity than sitting under a tree and carving a piece of wood while watching nature. Whether in front of a lake, a river, a valley, it didn’t matter.
Today, I have a small collection of knives. I even have four knives dedicated exclusively to wood carving. But I must admit that I don’t really find the time to fully dive into it. So, from time to time, I carve simple wooden mushrooms.
In daily life, woodworking is useful. Whether you want to set up a kitchen, a bedroom, build a workshop, or simply a shelter in the forest, you need to be able to know which types of wood are best suited for each of these activities.
With @altheana, we have a small cabin by a pond that we are trying to set up. With wood, we made a floor.
The advantages of woodworking
Do you know what I see as the main problem with consumer society? By wanting to get everything as quickly as possible, we don’t even pay attention to what we buy or what we already have at home.
Yes, you may have furniture that you had to assemble yourself. I do too. But do you have furniture that you made yourself or that a family member made for you? If there were an audience in front of me, I think there would be far fewer raised hands.
Yet, there is great satisfaction in having this kind of furniture at home. They tell a story, they have a soul, and most of the time, the signs of wear on them add even more character. So here is the first advantage: creating something with your hands or having something handmade brings satisfaction. More than an Ikea piece of furniture.
The other advantage of knowing how to work with wood is autonomy and self-sufficiency. You no longer depend on others because you know how to make your own furniture, structures, and tools. By working with natural materials, you can move away from the use of plastic.
As I wrote earlier, my grandfather tended to say that woodworking was a meditative activity. Whether carving a stick or building a piece of furniture, when you are with your tools, when you really know where you are going and what you need, it’s just a matter of assembly and common sense. You are then free to let your mind wander. He worked with wood without music. He was alone with the sound of his machines when they were running or with the noise of chisels against a piece of oak.
Today, woodworking is disappearing more and more. In our homes, most furniture is made at best from particleboard, at worst, from plastic. The problem with plastic is that it doesn’t age well, so when it’s too damaged, we throw it away. But I feel that there is an awareness of wood; it is making a comeback in homes. There are fewer and fewer carpenters on the market, yet demand is increasing. Knowing how to work with wood, in addition to the satisfaction of creating objects with your hands, the autonomy of crafting your own tools, the durability of well-maintained wood, and the mental well-being that this activity provides, also has an economic potential.
How would this skill transform my life?
I see a direct improvement in my daily life. Right now, I am moving into a house where everything needs to be redone. With @altheana, this is the first time we are moving in together, so we have no furniture.
By knowing how to work with wood, I would have the skills and ideas to create some pieces, but also to build my own workshop. Or even to buy wooden furniture at village markets and restore it to give it a new life, either at my place or for others.
When you know how to work with wood, the world opens up to you. And this is how I conclude my very first article written with LexiStep.

Le sujet sur lequel je dois donc rédiger 1 000 mots est : "Si tu pouvais apprendre instantanément une compétence, laquelle choisirais-tu ?"
Pourquoi ce choix ?
Le travail du bois est une compétence ancestrale et intemporelle. Nous avons toujours travaillé le bois : pour créer des outils, faire du feu, construire des maisons, etc. Le bois est l'une des ressources qui nous a le plus façonnés.
Même quand un arbre meurt et tombe par terre, il continue d’amener la vie autour de lui. Si vous vous baladez en forêt, vous trouverez forcément du bois mort. Amusez-vous à soulever une branche ou une écorce. Vous vous rendrez vite à l’évidence qu’il y a tout un monde qui vit dedans. De nombreuses espèces vivent grâce aux arbres morts.
Mais ce n'est pas tout. Outre l’aspect environnemental, j'ai toujours vu mon grand-père travailler le bois. Maintenant qu'il est en fin de vie, j'ai envie de suivre ses pas. Quand j'étais enfant et que j'allais en vacances chez lui, on faisait régulièrement des constructions en bois :
- Des jouets (des voitures, un train, des animaux),
- Des meubles (placards, chaises, tables),
- Des objets (balais, cuillères et autres ustensiles de cuisine).
Je l’ai vu, il a fait beaucoup de travaux à base de bois. Notamment tout un garage extérieur pour y mettre la voiture, des outils, du bois. Dans ce garage, il y a un étage qu'il a fait lui-même également, en bois. Je n'ai jamais vraiment eu le droit d'y monter, car ma grand-mère ne voulait pas. Pour y monter, il n'y avait pas d'escalier et il fallait soit sortir une échelle, soit escalader quelques meubles. J'ai souvent bravé les interdits pour y aller.
Très jeune, j'ai eu le droit d'avoir un couteau. Beaucoup de personnes pourraient dire que c'est la folie de donner un couteau à un enfant. Je dirais que ça dépend de l’éducation que vous donnez ensuite à l'enfant. Oui, il y a de grandes chances qu'un enfant avec un couteau se coupe, mais il y a très peu de chances que ce soit fatal pour lui ou pour quelqu'un d'autre. En revanche, donnez à un enfant un écran très tôt, les dommages sur le cerveau seront bien plus graves.
Avec ce couteau dans ma poche, quand je partais en balade avec mon grand-père, je m’amusais à tailler des branches, simplement pour leur donner une forme de pointe. Il disait qu'il n'y avait pas meilleure activité que de se poser sous un arbre et tailler un bout de bois en regardant la nature. Que ce soit devant un lac, une rivière, une vallée, peu importe.
Aujourd’hui, j'ai une petite collection de couteaux. J'ai même quatre couteaux qui servent exclusivement à la sculpture sur bois. Mais je dois bien avouer ne pas trouver le temps de m’y plonger réellement. Ainsi, il m'arrive de sculpter de simples champignons en bois, de temps en temps.
Dans la vie quotidienne, travailler le bois est utile. Que vous souhaitiez aménager une cuisine, une chambre, construire un atelier ou simplement un abri dans la forêt, vous devez être capable de connaître les essences de bois les plus adaptées à chacune de ces activités.
Avec @altheana, nous avons une petite cabane au bord d'un étang que nous essayons d'aménager. En bois, nous avons fait un plancher.
Les avantages du travail du bois
Connaissez-vous le principal problème, à mes yeux, de la société de consommation ? À force de vouloir obtenir tout le plus rapidement possible, on ne fait même plus attention à ce qu'on achète et à ce que nous avons déjà chez nous.
Oui, vous avez peut-être des meubles que vous avez dû monter vous-même. J'en ai aussi. Mais avez-vous des meubles que vous avez fabriqués vous-même ou qu'un membre de votre famille a fabriqués pour vous ? S'il y avait une assemblée devant moi, je pense qu'il y aurait beaucoup moins de mains levées.
Pourtant, il y a une grande satisfaction à avoir ces meubles chez soi. Ils racontent une histoire, ils ont une âme et, la plupart du temps, les marques d'usure sur ces meubles leur apportent encore plus de cachet. Voici donc le premier avantage : créer quelque chose de ses mains ou avoir quelque chose qui a été fait main offre de la satisfaction. Plus qu'un meuble Ikea.
L'autre avantage à savoir travailler le bois est l'autonomie et la suffisance. Vous ne dépendez plus des autres, car vous savez fabriquer vos propres meubles, structures et outils. En travaillant avec des matériaux naturels, vous pouvez alors vous éloigner de l'usage du plastique.
Comme je l'écrivais plus haut, mon grand-père avait tendance à dire que la menuiserie était une activité méditative. Que ce soit en taillant un bâton ou en construisant un meuble, quand vous êtes avec vos outils, que vous savez vraiment où vous allez et ce dont vous avez besoin, ce n'est plus qu'une question d'assemblage et de bon sens. Libre à vous alors de vous évader dans vos pensées. Lui travaillait le bois sans musique. Il était alors seul avec le bruit de ses machines quand elles fonctionnaient, ou alors avec le bruit des ciseaux à bois contre un morceau de chêne.
Aujourd'hui, le travail du bois se perd de plus en plus. Dans nos maisons, la plupart des meubles utilisent au mieux du bois aggloméré, au pire, du plastique. Le problème du plastique, c'est qu'il ne sait pas vieillir, alors quand il est trop abîmé, on le jette. Mais j'ai l'impression qu'il y a une prise de conscience sur le bois : il revient dans les maisons. Les menuisiers sont de moins en moins nombreux sur le marché, pourtant la demande augmente. En sachant travailler le bois, en plus de la satisfaction de créer des objets de ses mains, de l'autonomie de savoir confectionner ses propres outils, de la durabilité d'un bois bien entretenu et du bien-être mental que cette activité procure, il y a aussi un potentiel économique.
Comment cette compétence transformerait ma vie ?
J'y vois une amélioration directe dans mon quotidien. En ce moment, je suis en train d'emménager dans une maison où tout est à refaire. Avec @altheana, c'est la première fois que nous emménageons ensemble, nous n'avons donc aucun meuble.
En sachant travailler le bois, j'aurais donc les compétences et les idées pour en créer quelques-uns, mais aussi pour construire mon propre atelier. Ou encore pour acheter des meubles en bois dans des marchés de village et les retaper afin de leur donner une nouvelle vie, chez moi ou chez d'autres personnes.
