Experienced Cultivators are aware of the great deal of variance and significant differences seen in cultivars (aka strains) sourced from different suppliers and even seeds from the same source showing little to no consistency in phenotype, meaning one supplier's Kush is completely different than another's and/or you order 10 seeds, of the same cultivar from the same supplier and get 10 different phenotypes, with little similarities between them.
This is due to many contributing factors... One of which is the fact that Seed Banks often broker their seeds from multiple sources and have little to no experience with the genetics they sell beyond the name... Breeder A's selection and sort is different than Breeder B's and so are the versions of the Cultivars they offer, regardless of the name they share. Another reason you see bag of skittles variance is that many Cultivars available today are scatter bred from Poly-hybrid stock that may or may not pass any of their expressed traits to their offspring. The unique traits and characteristics that make a cherished cultivar can be completely lost and bred out in only a few generations of outcross by muddying the water in the gene pool. For these reasons, we avoided flavor-of-the-month Poly-hybrid stock and sought to ensure our supply was comprised of consistent Homozygous genetics.
For decades we have picked "Keepers" of choice cultivars we've acquired from known sources, that exhibited the attributes we desired most in our program... Deploying Highly strategized inbreeding with the goal to lock in and magnify desirable traits in order to convey outstanding genetics from one generation to another, while minimizing the transfer of undesirable traits in our stock.
