Milking Hive and Its Impact

in #hive-16792219 days ago

Well, there have been some recent talks about milking Hive with some of the influential users like @solominer, and a few others sharing their thoughts on the matter. Some users on the platform don't look okay with other users who perhaps look to be milking the platform.

Now, the point is, what effect can it have on the Hive ecosystem? Let's explore.

Milking Hive

Milking Hive refers to the practice of some individuals who are taking advantage of the platform for financial benefits, often without giving back anything that is valuable. In simple words, it is like someone taking money from the shared pot without putting anything into it.

Milking hive can happen in multiple ways:

Content Creation Only for Profit

Some users may create content only for the purpose of earning rewards, not because they have something of value to share. They might even recycle the old content or post content that isn't relevant just to collect a few bucks.

Manipulative Voting

Users might engage in strategic voting where they vote for their own or on the posts of others to increase their own rewards or influence reward pool distribution.

Artificial Engagement

Some users or groups might boost their presence artificially on the platform by making fake accounts or using other tactics to increase their rewards.

How Does It Affect Hive?

It can have multiple negative impacts on the Hive ecosystem.

Resource Depletion

When the system is exploited by users, it drains the rewards pool which is intended to support genuine contributors. This can have a negative impact on the overall amount of rewards available for everyone leading to its decrease.

Lowering Content Quality

If users are sharing content solely for the purpose of earning rewards rather than sharing something valuable, the quality of content on Hive can decline making the platform less appealing to readers and contributors who look for high-quality content.

Affecting Morale of Community

It can lead to frustration and a feeling of unfairness when users notice that others are profiting without making real contributions. This can be harmful to the overall morale of the community and drive away engaged and valuable members.

Creating Economic Imbalances

Milking Hive can lead to uneven distribution of rewards. For example, users who exploit the system might receive a disproportionate share of rewards, making it difficult for newbies or less influential users to compete and succeed.

What Can be Done?

The reward mechanism might be improved. Adjusting how rewards are distributed can help make sure that the contributions are rewarded fairly. This might include alterations to how votes are counted or new rules to prioritize quality.

Having strict guidelines or quality checks for content can be helpful in maintaining high standards and ensuring that content is adding value to the platform.

Promoting and encouraging a culture of genuine interaction and support within the community can minimize the appeal of milking and promote more meaningful contributions.

Users can better understand how rewards are distributed and there will be less potential for exploitation if the reward system and voting process are made more transparent.

Its good that this discussion has started gaining traction. The community needs to talk about this and maybe one solution is that we need to monetize Hive more. More money to flow in.

You are completely right about it and lately I felt the same that people simply take value OUT of the Hive blockchain. Not only that we need to elevate the content creation on Hive, but we also need to find ways to monetize it in order to bring value IN as well. Ads could be an answer to this. And secondly we need to extent the blockchain to something else beside content and hopefully the VSC project will bring that through decentralized smart contracts.

But we also need to find ways to monetize it.

Yes. Hive needs to find ways in monetizing users' content. This could also be a motivational thing for them.

Make me feel that @khaleelkazi and Inleo is heading more in the right direction with the community. Build income streams
