En los comienzos de la tarde de ayer por estas latitudes, finalizó el torneo major más antiguo del golf mundial, el más tradicional y probablemente el más prestigioso de los cuatro, aunque eso es solo una opinión personal, probablemente los norteamericanos, que tienen en sus tierras tres de los cuatro campeonatos que componen el Grand Slam, no estén totalmente de acuerdo.
Tan compenetrados están los norteamericanos con la importancia de este único gran torneo que no se desarrolla en sus propias tierras que en lo que va del siglo XXI han ganado la mitad más uno de las ediciones disputadas, "dejando" al resto de los jugadores de otros países que se repartan las demás victorias, muy a su pesar.
En esta 152ava edición, al igual que en la del año anterior, un nacido en los Estados Unidos de América obtuvo el título y un suculento cheque de 3,1 millones. Xander Schauffele cerró este año con dos títulos de Grand Slam ya que se había impuesto en el PGA Championship, pero eso no es todo, por primera vez en los últimos 42 años, los cuatro torneos más importantes del golf han quedado en manos de norteamericanos ya que el número uno del mundo, Scottie Scheffler ganó Augusta National y Bryson De Chambeau se quedó con el US Open.
Xander, nacido en San Diego, estado de California hace 30 años, es hijo de un inmigrante alemán y madre taiwanesa, posee antecedentes familiares de deportistas de élite, su bisabuelo fue un buen jugador de fútbol que llegó a defender los colores de la selección de Austria y su abuelo fue un destacado atleta que obtuvo más de 40 títulos en disco, jabalina y lanzamiento de bala.
Schauffele se hizo profesional en el año 2015 y en su carrera llevaba acumulados 7 triunfos en torneos organizados y fiscalizados por la PGA pero los torneos mayores se le habían negado, mucho se hablaba de su actitud mental ya que había liderado en varias oportunidades en estos importantes campeonatos pero finalmente había sucumbido a la presión o las circunstancias quedando relegado, eso fue hasta el PGA Championship de este año, cuando obtuvo el triunfo de manera brillantes soportando el peso de ser el líder desde el comienzo de la última vuelta. Ahora refrenda su gran juego y su concentración al quedarse de manera brillante con el Open Británico, viniendo de atrás y con una última vuelta extraordinaria pese a las condiciones climáticas adversas, en esa última ronda consiguió 6 birdies y ningún bogey en su tarjeta, finalizó con 65 golpes (-6 respecto al par de la cancha) para quedar al frente del leaderboard con un total de -9, aventajó por 2 a su inmediato perseguidor, el británico Justin Rose de 43 años de edad que de haber triunfado hubiera sido el de mayor edad desde que en el año 1967 el argentino Roberto De Vicenzo ganara el título con 44 años.
Xander Schauffele no ha tenido demasiado tiempo para festejar tan importante logro, pocas horas después empacó sus cosas y puso rumbo a Francia donde defenderá su medalla de oro conseguida en Tokio 2020.
A great champion, again

Now he confirms his great game and his concentration by winning the British Open brilliantly, coming from behind and with an extraordinary last round despite the adverse weather conditions, in that last round he got 6 birdies and no bogey on his card, and he finished with 65 strokes (-6 concerning the court's par) to be at the top of the leaderboard with a total of -9, he was 2 ahead of his immediate pursuer, the 43-year-old British Justin Rose, who if he triumphed would been the oldest since the Argentine Roberto De Vicenzo won the title in 1967 at the age of 44.
