A farmer is always a farmer, it only extends and expands to many other branches of farming. Like animal husbandry, crop planting and so many other branches. Right from my younger age, living with my grand mother, i have loved goat farming. My grandmother then was rearring so many goats in their goat's barn in her kitchen in the village.
Goats are very sensitive, they do not strive well in a dirty barn. That's why every time im about to tie their food, i will first of all sweep off the remains of the grasses they didn't finished eating previously.
Another observation i have gathered about goats is if they have urinated on their grasses/food dropped for them to eat, if their urine and poop touches it, they may never eat those food again. They will rather be shouting or bleeting in the barn hungry but can't eat those ones they messed up by themselves ooooo.
I make sure i sweep of everywhere before tying a new bunch of food for them as you can see me doing here.
This is my brand new bunches of grasses i brought home to tie for my goats. I go with my wheelbarrow to push grasses home for my goats, and I wear long sleeves and long skirts to avoid scratches on my body in the bushes while cutting grasses for my goats, I like them.
Whenever we go to our farmland after work, we gather goats food. A particular type of grasses that are designated as goats' food. Both of us will load lots of grasses in bunches for our goats. My grandmother tied a long strong rope for their food on the plank of the goat barn's inside roof then a portion of the grasses are tied their for them. They will immediately rush to it and start eating the grasses.
She normally sweeps and cleans up their barn every other day. She had two females and two males but within a short space of time, kid goats were everywhere.
There was one particular female goat she named "ACHAMA" this very female goat was giving birth to twins and twice yearly and within a little space of time goats were everywhere, their barn was expanded to accommodate more goats. She normally sold them to make much money for the family. I loved it all and have learned doing the same.
I never knew that i was learning and imbibing all those knowledge, strategies and methods of rearing goats. Which is part of my farming activities today.
Some years back, my family left the city life and relocated to the village where we have a larger space and a compound, i now created some space where i built a larger goat barn. Two male goats were gifted to me by two different family friends in two different occasions and a female brownish and black coloured goat also. I now started goat rearing, I'm glad but very tideous to feed them.
Now, i go all out by myself searching and bringing back loads of grasses suitable for feeding them home for them to eat quality and fresh grasses.
I also pack their poop in empty cement sacks I use them for manures to fertilize my crops like yams, cassava, vegetable, okro, maize and every other crops I planted in my garden. No longer buying fertilizer for croppings.
