Teniente Rey Street, Havana [EN/ES]

Once again I find myself walking through one of the streets of the Cuban capital, in one of my favourite places, the Historic Centre of Old Havana. In this post I am going to comment and show some areas of Teniente Rey street where I visited recently.

This is quite an old avenue and as I walk along it, I can see the mark that time has left on the buildings that surround it, and they are no less beautiful for being old. Teniente Rey Street is very busy as it connects two historical points of the city, which are the Convent of San Francisco de Asis and the National Capitol, this street stretches between these two places.

Like almost all the streets in Havana, it has had several names over the years. Although it is currently called Avenida Brasil, everyone still calls it Teniente Rey, which was the first name it had and by which it has always been known.

Looking at the buildings along this street, I notice that the place is being (or has been) restored, although not all of it, and this results a bit of contrasting. A newly painted and repaired building can be seen next to a rather dilapidated one. In one section of the street I feel like I am walking through colonial Havana, with its colourful façades and wooden windows and gates, and after walking a few steps I find another scene and this time it seems to me that I have advanced too far in time and that everything has aged, finding myself in a place quite deteriorated by the passing of the years.

Even so, there are many beautiful buildings that I hope will be restored, I think it is necessary as the design and beauty of the architecture of each structure deserves to be preserved and protected.

On both sides of the street there are many buildings of colonial architecture, high-strutted dwellings with overhanging balconies, facades with tall windows and wide wooden gates with metal plating. Like many streets in the historic centre, it is quite narrow and cobblestoned, which is why vehicles are not allowed on it, only pedestrians are allowed, which I like very much because I can walk with complete liberty.

In addition to residential houses, there are also more modern buildings such as cafes and restaurants, cultural centres, bodegas, pharmacies and some shops. This street is very popular with tourists who come to the city, as Teniente Rey crosses one of the largest and oldest squares in Havana, the Plaza Vieja, so it is a pleasure to walk all the way to this ancient Havana square.

This is undoubtedly another of the many avenues where the history and culture of Havana are preserved. I really enjoyed walking along it and getting to know this area, it was a new experience.

Una vez más me encuentro caminando por una de las calles de la capital cubana, por uno de mis lugares preferidos, el Centro Histórico de la Habana Vieja. En esta publicación voy a comentar y a mostrar algunas zonas de la calle Teniente Rey por donde anduve de visita recientemente.

Esta es una avenida bastante antigua y mientras camino por ella, puedo ver la huella que ha ido dejando el tiempo en las construcciones que la rodean, y no por ser antiguas son menos hermosas. La calle Teniente Rey es muy transitada ya que conecta dos puntos históricos de la ciudad, que son el Convento de San Francisco de Asís y el Capitolio Nacional, esta calle se extiende entre estos dos lugares.

Como casi todas las calles de La Habana, ha tenido varios nombres a lo largo de los años. Aunque actualmente tiene por nombre avenida Brasil, todos la siguen llamando Teniente Rey, que fue el primer nombre que tuvo y por el que siempre ha sido conocida.

Al observar los edificios que se encuentran en esta calle, me doy cuenta de que el lugar está siendo (o ha sido) restaurado, aunque no en su totalidad, y esto resulta un poco contrastante. Se puede ver una edificación recién pintada y reparada junto a otra bastante deteriorada. En un tramo de la calle siento que estoy caminando por la Habana colonial, con sus viviendas de coloridas fachadas y ventanas y portones de madera, y al caminar unos pocos pasos me encuentro otro escenario y esta vez me parece que avance demasiado en el tiempo y que todo ha envejecido, encontrándome en un lugar bastante deteriorado por el paso de los años.

Aun así, hay muchas edificaciones hermosas que espero sean restauradas, pienso que es necesario ya que el diseño y la belleza de la arquitectura de cada estructura merecen ser conservados y resguardados.

A ambos lados de la calle hay muchos edificios de arquitectura colonial, viviendas de altos puntales con balcones voladizos, fachadas con altas ventanas y anchos portones de madera enchapados con metal. Como muchas calles del centro histórico es bastante estrecha y está empedrada, por esa razón se prohíbe el uso de vehículos, solo está permitido el paso peatonal, cosa que me gusta mucho porque así puedo caminar con total libertad.

Además de casas de viviendas también encontramos construcciones más modernas como cafeterías y restaurantes, centros culturales, bodegas, farmacias y algunos puntos de venta. Esta calle es muy visitada por los turistas que vienen a la ciudad, ya que Teniente Rey atraviesa una de las mayores y más antiguas plazas de La Habana, la Plaza Vieja, por lo tanto, es todo un placer caminar hasta llegar a esta antigua plaza habanera.

Está es sin duda otra de las tantas avenidas donde se preservan la historia y la cultura de la Habana. Disfrute mucho recorrerla y conocer esta zona, fue una nueva experiencia.

Beautiful photographs of Calle Tenienterey, one of the oldest streets where there are many buildings that, despite the passage of time, preserve beautiful architecture. I also love walking through these streets.
