If you are in the crypto space for a while, you surely know that scam is simply everywhere!

Sometimes it is very evident to identify it, and some other times, it may let us wondering if a message is legit and what we should do to help a user out.

The rules are simple.
If it feels strange, it is most probably a scam.
Even if it is a friend who is requesting something from you, it could well be a hacked account.

In this post, I will specifically mention a very common message that one may receive or as a direct message or as a message on their social media.

I received the below on one of my YouTube videos

The video content is very worth learning!I need some advice:I have a wallet address with usdt in it and I have a recovery phrase.:(surge fence muscle flower taxi gadget inject rough stage usage electric retreat).:How should I transfer them into my own wallet?

This is a very suspicious message, lets check out the red flags

Red Flags

  • This person has shared a wallet recovery phrase, which is meant to be kept private. No one would (or should) openly share this if it were legitimate.

  • This may be an attempt to lure the user into interacting with this “wallet” to try and gain control over an actual wallet.

  • Malicious Wallets and Honeypots: The wallet could show funds that you are can access but can’t actually transfer out. They will probably try to make you use your own funds on network fees or interact with malicious smart contracts to “unlock” the funds. They could get access to your wallet or you could lose your own funds.

If you interact:

  • You may be tricked into paying transaction fees so you may lose your funds, or interact with malicious smart contracts.

  • If you engage further could lead to additional phishing attempts or malware sent to you

What you should do:

  • Ignore the Message: Don’t respond or engage in any way - and if possible, additionally ...
  • Delete or Report the Message

Thanks for saving us from this scam Coach!!.

Hi, I hope you are very well!

I have received this message and on one occasion I do not know how they took my account, metamask perhaps without realizing it. I clicked on a link in the mail and they stole my account with 700 $ and several NFT that I had been collecting for some time. I still don't know how they stole my account.

Sorry to hear that!
Sometimes life bring to us what we lost at some point, I hope you can get it back somehow and be safe out there!

Never click on a link!...
Why you had to click?
Maybe it was not your . .. I never click on a link from Jesus..

Never click the links, these websites have hidden code that can steal stuff from you via a number on methods. Just visiting such sites compromises your accounts and browser extensions.

One way to prevent metamask from being compromised (at least to some degree) is to make it so the extension can only access and interact with whitelisted websites, at least then they won't be able to steal you account as easily.

This is a great tip!

Generally I have little sympathy to people falling for such... obvious scams.

That being said, a number of thing you should always keep in mind when on the internet.

  1. NEVER trust messages from anyone you don't know IRL. Even then be sceptical about anything IRL people send you.
  2. NEVER click any links sent by random people.. or any links send by ANYONE. (type or google search the website first)
  3. NEVER download anything from random people or even IRL people unless you absolutely know what you are downloading.
  4. Set metamask to only be able to access whitelisted sites. This can prevent then hijacking it if you do click a link (not always though), Do this for all browser wallet extensions.
  5. Get rich quick things are actually get poor extra quick things.

There's loads more but honestly just the first 3 do a lot to keep you safe.

I once received this message but I’m someone who doesn’t really take things seriously
I’m glad I didn’t even respond to the message

I am glad too!

I've received this sort of message several times, never interacted with it. It's just a bait lol, as is clearly evident through revealing sensitive information.
