Day To Night (Short Story)

Part 2

The searing heat of the day eventually turned to a darkened night sky. The moon brought a chill in the air, almost the polar opposite compared to the weather only hours ago.

New Landeras was a town - if it could be called that - where many people decided to settle, far from the eyes of the normal world. Scoosha, in general, was a world out of the way of any and all support from the Sanctum worlds. Where the Inner Sanctum had law enforcement, the Outer Worlds had militias and roving gangs of vigilantes. Where the Inner Sanctum had elected politicians, the Outer Worlds had warlords. The Sanctum had fines for those who stepped out of line and acted uncivilised. New Landeras had a man pissing on the doorway of the bar he was just kicked out of.

Gaan watched the man stagger around, shouting abuse at the owners and all of those who remained inside. There can't have been many in there now. Gaan had been counting those who left, compared to those who arrived throughout the late day.

The noise from the drunk became so irritating, that he wanted to shoot him with a stun round, but he decided against it, not wanting to draw any attention to his position.

One last taunt and the door burst open, thudding hard enough to crack the wooden wall that housed it.

"I'm not going to tell you again!" The barman shouted as he stomped outside.

The drunk stepped back quickly, mumbling as he did. The barman continued to shout until he slipped, landing on his back. The drunk started to laugh as a few more faces appeared in the doorway.

"Piss," Gaan could hear the barman say.

The drunk mumbled incoherently and turned around, not noticing the barman stand up and shake himself off.

"Piss on my door? Dirty bastard." The barman complained, reaching for his gun. "Gerrid," he called.

The drunk turned around and saw the barrel. "No, I'm sorry," he cried. A loaded weapon is a sobering sight for all.

A gunshot pierced the air and the thud of the drunk hitting the ground was the only thing heard until silence followed.

"Okay, everyone, that's it I'm closing up for the night!" The barman shouted to the rest inside, who streamed out one by one. Some stumbled, and some walked steadily.

"Got visual," Gaan said calmly as he stared at the Triskani.

"I have him in my sights too," Klennu responded.

Gaan watched as he walked out of sight. Soon after, he could see the small orb follow the Triskani around the corner.

"He's getting onto a skimmer bike," Klennu said.

"Keep your distance, but maintain a visual." Gaan pushed up against the roof and stood tall. His arms and legs were numb, but he stretched life back into his limbs. "Seems like I'll be riding after him,"

"Mount up, I'll keep track of him and I'll map the route for you."

Gaan had a feeling it could be a trek, in the back of his mind he was relieved he wasn't staying in the town itself. The noise could alert the locals and outsiders were often met with mobs around here if they caused trouble.
