Greeting Readers!
I hope the weekend was restful! I was working through the whole weekend and am now exhausted. I didn't even touch Fledgling, but luckily had a piece ready for today.
I hope you enjoy all of it!
The terror almost immediately faded into fear. Kay had always known that Saita considered the older human to be her knight in shining armour. It was the only reason Kay never attacked him directly. She knew that if she had done that, Saita would have completely lost the plot.
The human stayed with her as various tests were done but didn’t say much. Kay couldn’t help but wonder how much he hated her. She knew he had sat at her deathbed because he had no idea where to find the one he truly cared about. She also knew he was only staying now to make sure that she didn’t run off with the queen’s body to do whatever she wanted.
What she wanted. What a joke. She didn’t know how she had gotten here and knew of no way to return to her sanctuary. She was exposed, and it wasn’t a feeling she enjoyed. She hadn’t felt this overwhelmed since she was a small child. Before her father beat all her feelings from her.
“Jara wouldn’t stop asking questions when he saw the bite on my arm. He was sure Saita was vomiting blood until he saw the wound. I had to talk him down for some time before he would let me leave.” Said Bolx as he stepped into the hospital room where Doran and Kay sat.
Kay had refused to wash her mouth or change into the hospital robes. She sat on the bed with her knees drawn up to her chest and her chin resting on them. She was looking out the window at the foot of the bed at the night sky that was starting to turn a lighter shade of blue.
“Where is my wife?” asked Bolx softly.
“I don’t know.” Kay muttered.
The two men shared a look of concern before Bolx pressed the matter.
“Has this happened before?”
“No.”
The giant Saith rubbed at his bandaged arm. He looked worried, but not so worried that he would do something stupid. He seemed to be struggling to find the right words to say to her. Instead, he stood up and touched the back of her head.
Kay flinched, not because of the pain, but rather the painful memories that were surfacing. Memories she hadn’t ever dealt with and didn’t want to now. Bolx immediately retracted his hand, and there was an odd look of concern on his face.
“Are you in pain?”
Kay ignored him and continued to stare out the window. She mentally begged the queen to return, but there was silence from the depths of her mind. She was so invested in dragging Saita back she missed the conversation between Doran and Bolx until a word snapped her back to consciousness.
“You will not imprison me.” She growled at them.
Doran looked sheepish, but Bolx waved the comment away.
“Of course we won’t imprison you.”
That wasn’t something that she had expected, and she reacted in anger.
“I had you murdered, I killed her son, I tore this world and countless others asunder. I should be imprisoned.”
“She has a point.” Said Doran.
“She failed in her plans, and she’s not going to repeat history. We don’t need to imprison her.” Bolx then turned to her and smiled, “I think you should just remain indoors until we can figure out what our next steps are.”
“Our? There is no our. There is only you and what you rule, as your queen is gone. Like a coward.”
“Well, that’s hardly fair. You were one of those to give her these horrific nightmares.”
The anger was quickly replaced by a strange feeling. One she didn’t recognise at all, but she didn’t like it.
“Am I right in understanding you had no part in this?” asked Bolx.
“Yes. I was sleeping, then staring at a mirror with an aching throat.” She wrapped her arms tighter around her knees, a familiar feeling to her.
“And you want to go back?”
“I…” she stopped herself. She didn’t know what she wanted.
“We’ll keep an eye on her but that’s it. I am not going to imprison her for this. How do you think it would look to the public if I suddenly threw the queen into a cell? No, we’ll play it by ear and let her be.”
“Let me be? I told you, I…”
“You tripped over Saita’s feet. I don’t think you have any control over that body other than the most basic of functions.” Said Bolx gently.
He then turned back to Doran. “The children will be difficult. At four, they’re not going to understand why they can’t see their mother. I’m not even sure if I should tell any of her family about this. Hmm, it’s been a while since they saw my parents. I think I’ll send them there until this blows over. Yes, that should work.”
He turned back to Kay. “And you can rest until you’re ready to…”
He paused, not sure what else to say.
“Fell Dragons destroyed everything that was yours.” She snapped at him. “You should hate me. Want to kill me, lock me in a cage, or worse. Why won’t you?”
Bolx shrugged, “If I continue my hate of the Fell Dragons, I would have to hate my wife too.”
We will be moving back to Saita in the current timeline after this.
