Greetings Readers
I hope the day is treating you well and you're all gearing up for a fantastic weekend. Hopefully, I will have some time to relax this weekend, but I guess we'll see.
Please enjoy this update!
Saita paced the room that Queen Kay had allowed her to stay in. Allowing the Fell Dragon to speak to the queen was a terrifying experience. She could still feel the teeth and claw marks on her skin even though it was hours after she had fled the royal breakfast.
She felt panicked. Her thoughts, now blatantly exposed to Kay, were something she had always thought was secret and her own.
You need to calm down.
“How would you like me to calm down!” she hissed under her breath.
What would panicking help you?
“Shut up!” she muttered.
You called to me. I’m awake now. You needed help, and I am your aid.
“I never wanted this!”
Kay remained silent before she answered.
I had no choice.
“No choice in what? You could have died.”
And left you in the cage, but I couldn’t. You don’t know what the cage strips from Dragons. Trust me. I am a far better fate than what would have befallen you had I not agreed to this.
Saita stopped her pacing. A thought had been circulating in her head since this morning, and she couldn’t get it to abate.
“Would you prefer a body to be free of me?”
Kay fell silent. Saita could sense her uncomfortableness and knew she was on to something.
“If you hate me so much, then wouldn’t it be better to be free of everything to do with me?”
I can’t.
“Oh, what the hell? Of course you can! If I give you the freedom you crave, then you should jump at the opportunity.”
I think I will rest now.
“Oh no you don’t!”
Saita grabbed hold of the consciousness within her and dragged it into a hastily constructed mental room. Kay wasn’t prepared as a body she had long since given up suddenly materialised around her. She looked around her are the swirling blues, greys, and silvers before she fixed Saita with a grimace.
“Really? Really! You thought this was a good idea. To see me face-to-face? We are mirror images. Enjoy the nightmare fuel.”
She wasn’t far off, but Saita concentrated on her eyes, knowing that they would be blue and not grey like her remaining one. However, soon the other details started to bleed through as Kay started to gain a consciousness in the mental room. A thick scar tore up from her neck, covering half of the right side of her face. Her ash hair turned blonde as more of her identity came through. Even her height diminished a little as more scars sprouted in places that didn’t mirror Saita’s.
Kay harshly chuckled as her right hand went to cover the right side of her face. “Oh god damn it. Just when I was enjoying seeing through two eyes.”
Saita felt a hint of fear in her belly remembering the final show-off between the two of them, but she pushed it down in favour of the fury that was developing.
“There, are you happy now? You can face me.” Snapped the Fell Dragon. “Why do this? Why not ignore me as you have done for almost a century.”
“Two centuries.” Corrected Saita.
“A century.” Repeated Kay with a malicious grin.
Saita shook her head to ease some of the fury. She didn’t know why Kay was antagonising her now, but it was infuriating. She was no longer that scared young queen, terrified that people would discover she harboured a monster. She was no longer queen, and she no longer cared what people thought of her.
“What do you want?” she demanded of the Fell Dragon.
Kay sighed and rolled her eyes, “I told you already.”
“You’re an intent.”
“Exactly.”
“My guide.”
“Yes.”
“But you haven’t done anything to that extent yet.”
“Because you buried me. You could have set me free, but you didn’t. Even now, you can’t. You may demand it, but I feel what connects us pulling me closer.”
“What? You think I am doing this?”
“Well, I have no control. I’m trapped here.” Kay indicated around her.
Saita wanted to jump on the Fell Dragon and beat a better answer from her but restrained herself.
Kay grinned, she knew what the warrior was feeling.
“I said I would remain quiet until you needed guidance, and I have kept that promise every single time.”
The way Kay had said that made Saita pause, and she was about to query it when Kay took a step forward and growled.
“We cannot tally here. The more we tally here, the less chance we have to save Bolx and your son.”
“Why do you even care? It was your fault that they went missing in the first place.”
“Like I said all those years ago, we are pawns in a game, and we are not in the positions that we need to be in. For us to be in the positions that we need to be in, we must work together.” Kay extended a hand to Saita. “Things need to play out the way they must, but until then, a truce. I will remain quiet until such time that you need me to guide you, but you must listen to my guidance. Don’t, and we’ll be stuck here forever.”
The final sentence made Saita go cold, and she knew it to be true. She needed to set aside her differences with herself from another time, but still, there was something that nagged at her.
“You said you kept your promise every single time when it came to guiding me. That implies more than just the night you came to me before the birth of the twins. Doesn’t it?”
Saita dreaded the answer when Kay put her hand down, and the look on her face was unmistakeably one of guilt followed by one of confusion, as if the feelings were something that Fell Dragon wasn’t used to feeling.
“What are you hiding from me?”
What is she hiding indeed.
