On one of my recent walks through the charming streets of Old Havana, my curiosity was piqued by the sight of lush vegetation on Mercaderes Street, a refreshing rarity in the city center. Upon reaching the gate, one could see small tables strategically placed under cheerful blue umbrellas, each with wooden and iron seats, inviting moments of intimacy. Without hesitation, I ventured into this corner, letting myself be seduced by its bohemian atmosphere and the appeal of an adjoining garden that promised to be very special.

En uno de mis recientes paseos por las encantadoras calles de La Habana Vieja, despertó mi curiosidad la vista de la exuberante vegetación de la calle Mercaderes, una refrescante rareza en el centro de la ciudad. Al llegar a la puerta, se podían ver pequeñas mesas estratégicamente ubicadas bajo alegres sombrillas azules, cada una con asientos de madera y hierro, que invitaban a momentos de intimidad. Sin dudarlo, me aventuré hacia ese rincón, dejándome seducir por su ambiente bohemio y el atractivo de un jardín contiguo que prometía ser muy especial.
As I approached the entrance, my suspicions were confirmed; on the left, a sign proclaimed "Café Literario Marqués de Arcos." On the right, a plaque revealed that I was in front of the House of Poetry, adorned with a fragment of a poem by Eliseo Diego. An irresistible call to contemplation. If you want to enjoy an exquisite coffee and a moment of peace in an inspiring setting, you only have to go to Mercaderes Street, between San Ignacio and San Juan de Dios. I decided to go inside, driven by the desire to discover this captivating place and taste a good coffee.
Al acercarme a la entrada, mis sospechas se confirmaron; a la izquierda, un letrero proclamaba "Café Literario Marqués de Arcos". A la derecha, una placa me reveló que estaba frente a la Casa de la Poesía, adornada con un fragmento de un poema de Eliseo Diego. Una irresistible llamada a la contemplación. Si quieres disfrutar de un café exquisito y de un momento de paz en un entorno inspirador, solo tienes que acercarte a la calle Mercaderes, entre San Ignacio y San Juan de Dios. Decidí entrar, impulsada por el deseo de descubrir este cautivador lugar y degustar un buen café.
The interior of the café is a cozy room, although of modest dimensions, with capacity for about thirty diners. The varnished wooden ceilings radiate warmth, while the furniture in black and white tones adds a touch of discreet elegance. However, the real magic lies in the walls and the backs of the chairs, where phrases and fragments of poems by authors from all latitudes are intertwined, creating a literary atmosphere. Even the doyles on the tables also had these phrases
El interior del café es un local acogedor, aunque de modestas dimensiones, con capacidad para unos treinta comensales. Los techos de madera barnizada irradian calidez, mientras que el mobiliario en tonos blancos y negros añade un toque de discreta elegancia. Sin embargo, la verdadera magia reside en las paredes y los respaldos de las sillas, donde se entrelazan frases y fragmentos de poemas de autores de todas las latitudes, creando una atmósfera literaria. Incluso los doyles de las mesas también tenían estas frases
At one end of the room, a small black bar gleamed under the dim light, presided over by an imposing coffee maker. There, a friendly assistant took orders for the different coffees and snacks offered by the establishment. I decided on a cappuccino, but asked to have it served at one of the little tables on the patio. While the interior decor was lovely, the idea of enjoying the cool, balanced climate combined with the poetic ambiance and lush greenery of the adjoining garden was simply irresistible.
Even though almost all the outside tables were occupied, a peaceful silence reigned, an atmosphere that invited meditation and reading. In fact, many visitors found themselves absorbed in their electronic devices, enjoying their moment.
En un extremo del local, bajo la tenue luz, brillaba una pequeña barra negra presidida por una imponente cafetera. Allí, una amable asistente tomaba los pedidos de los diferentes cafés y snacks que ofrecía el establecimiento. Me decidí por un capuchino, pero pedí que me lo sirvieran en una de las mesitas del patio. Si bien la decoración interior era encantadora, la idea de disfrutar del clima fresco y equilibrado combinado con el ambiente poético y la exuberante vegetación del jardín contiguo era simplemente irresistible.
A pesar de que casi todas las mesas del exterior estaban ocupadas, reinaba un silencio apacible, una atmósfera que invitaba a la meditación y la lectura. De hecho, muchos visitantes se encontraban absortos en sus dispositivos electrónicos, disfrutando de su momento.
As I sipped the delicious cappuccino, I immersed myself in the magic of the place. The little tables, built from wooden slats, displayed engraved phrases from various writers, a charming design detail. After finishing my coffee, I headed out to the garden, a space I had been eager to explore since the moment I set down a cake at the Literary Café.
Mientras saboreaba el delicioso capuchino, me sumergí en la magia del lugar. Las mesitas, construidas con listones de madera, mostraban frases grabadas de varios escritores, un encantador detalle de diseño. Después de terminar mi café, me dirigí al jardín, un espacio que tenía ganas de explorar desde el momento en que dejé un pastel en el Café Literario.
To access the garden, you have to climb a few steps, where you are greeted by a full-length statue of the famous writer and Nobel Prize winner for Literature, Gabriel García Márquez. From there, a path of red ceramic slabs meanders through the lush vegetation, inviting you to take a leisurely stroll. Along the path there are benches strategically placed in the shade of the trees for those who wish to rest and immerse themselves in the welcoming atmosphere.
Para acceder al jardín hay que subir unos escalones, donde nos recibe una estatua de cuerpo entero del célebre escritor y Premio Nobel de Literatura, Gabriel García Márquez. Desde allí, un camino de losas de cerámica roja serpentea entre la frondosa vegetación, invitando a dar un paseo tranquilo. A lo largo del camino hay bancos estratégicamente colocados a la sombra de los árboles para quienes deseen descansar y sumergirse en el ambiente acogedor.
In this beautiful garden, in addition to the abundant flora, you can also admire the busts of renowned writers. Among them, there is Hans Christian Andersen, considered one of the founders of children's and young adult literature, as well as the renowned Peruvian poet César Vallejo, an author highly appreciated in Cuba, among others.
En este hermoso jardín, además de la abundante flora, también se pueden admirar los bustos de reconocidos escritores. Entre ellos, está Hans Christian Andersen, considerado uno de los fundadores de la literatura infantil y juvenil, así como el reconocido poeta peruano César Vallejo, autor muy apreciado en Cuba, entre otros.
At the end of the garden, I saw a peculiar structure: a wall composed of two rows of superimposed arches, creating an imposing façade that rose above the garden's vegetation. I went through one of the arches, but soon noticed that construction work was going on.
Despite the inconvenience, I was able to glimpse a lovely fountain with crystal-clear water, surrounded by irregularly shaped steps. At the back there were plants with bell-shaped purple flowers, and in the centre a beautiful sculpture representing a lady holding a vase. I retraced my steps along that reddish path that led me back to the little tables.
Al final del jardín vi una estructura peculiar: un muro compuesto por dos hileras de arcos superpuestos, creando una fachada imponente que se alzaba sobre la vegetación del jardín. Pasé por uno de los arcos, pero pronto me di cuenta de que estaban en obras.
A pesar de las molestias, pude vislumbrar una preciosa fuente de agua cristalina, rodeada de escalones de forma irregular. Al fondo había plantas con flores violetas en forma de campana, y en el centro una hermosa escultura que representaba a una dama sosteniendo un jarrón. Volví sobre mis pasos por ese sendero rojizo que me llevó de nuevo a las mesitas.
The Café Literario Marqués de Arcos is a truly charming and interesting place, with a captivating interior and exterior design, especially its beautiful garden, where you can enjoy a delicious coffee and invite yourself to read and contemplate.
