Today I want to share an experience that I lived yesterday with my son, when we passed by the park that adjoins the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, located at the intersection of Linea and C in Vedado. I used to frequent this place when I was a teenager, since my junior high school was only a block away.
I fondly remember my high school days. My friends and I used to hang out in the park next to the Parroquia, which even served as a landmark to locate us. In fact, we had a Chemistry teacher who would mention it for everything, and we students would often identify it as “The Chemist's Parish”. We would sit under the shade of the trees, chatting and enjoying the tranquility and beauty of the place. Yesterday, as I passed by it, I decided to stop because I noticed how beautiful and splendorous the vegetation of the park was, always as exuberant.
Next to the parquet , the imposing gothic structure of the church as always attracted my attention. I marveled at its bell tower and architectural details that seemed to transport me to another era. I could spend hours contemplating it. Since I was a child, I have always been fascinated by different architectural designs, and Gothic is one of my favorites.

Les deseo a todos una maravillosa jornada. Hoy quiero compartir una experiencia que viví ayer junto a mi hijo, cuando pasamos por el parque que colinda con la Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, ubicada en la intersección de Línea y C en el Vedado. Este lugar solía frecuentarlo cuando era adolescente, ya que mi escuela secundaria básica se encontraba a solo una cuadra de allí.
Recuerdo con mucho cariño mis días de estudiante en la secundaria. Mis amigos y yo solíamos pasar el tiempo en el parque junto a la Parroquia, que incluso servía como punto de referencia para ubicarnos. De hecho, teníamos un profesor de Química que la mencionaba para todo, y nosotros, los estudiantes, muchas veces la identificábamos como “La Parroquia del Químico”. Nos sentábamos bajo la sombra de los árboles, charlando y disfrutando de la tranquilidad y la belleza del lugar. Ayer, al pasar junto a ella, decidí parar porque noté lo bella y esplendorosa que estaba la vegetación del parque, siempre igual de exuberante.
Junto al parqué , la imponente estructura gótica de la iglesia como siempre atrajo mi atención. Me dejaba maravillada con su campanario y sus detalles arquitectónicos que parecían transportar a otra época. Podía pasarme horas contemplándola. Desde niña, siempre me han fascinado los diferentes diseños arquitectónicos, y el gótico es uno de mis favoritos.
This parish is a testimony to Havana's rich history and architectural beauty. Built in 1875 as a church and converted into a parish in 1982, it was not until it was handed over to the Dominican Fathers after 1900 that it was embellished, with the addition of side chapels and an elegant bell tower, as noted in the bibliography consulted. Every time I went to that park, I was engrossed in contemplating the parish, and on two occasions I was able to enter and observe its beautiful stained glass windows. That is why I was so eager to show it to my son.
Esta parroquia es un testimonio de la rica historia y belleza arquitectónica de La Habana. Construida en 1875 como iglesia y convertida en parroquia en 1982, no fue hasta su entrega a los Padres Dominicos despues de 1900 que se embelleció, añadiéndole capillas laterales y un elegante campanario, como se señala en la bibliografía consultada. Cada vez que iba a ese parque, me quedaba absorto contemplando la parroquia, y en dos ocasiones pude entrar y observar sus hermosas vitrales. Por eso tenía tantas ganas de enseñársela a mi hijo.
The facade is surrounded by a wall with an iron gate where a cross is detailed on each leaf, and from there you can see the three arches of the entrance, the middle one more pronounced and drawn. Its arches are characteristic of the Gothic style, but have unique details are observed both in the windows and doors, are very aesthetic. The windows still have wooden sashes, but the beautiful stained glass windows that gave color and beauty to the interior of the church are no longer visible.
La fachada está rodeada por un muro con una verja de hierro donde se detalla una cruz en cada hoja, y desde allí se ven los tres arcos de la entrada, el del medio más pronunciado y dibujado. Sus arcos son característicos del estilo gótico, pero tienen detalles único se observan tanto en las ventanas como en las puertas, son muy estéticos. Las ventanas conservan las hojas de madera, pero ya no se ven las hermosas vidrieras que daban color y belleza al interior de la iglesia
Above the main entrance arch is a very attractive trefoil rose window, the eye is drawn to it. At the top is the parish steeple, an imposing structure that rises above the main building. It tapers as it ascends, ending in a pointed spire. This design is visually impressive. The openings in the steeple are decorated with carved stone patterns that add a striking ornamental touch.
Sobre el arco principal de la entrada hay un rosetón de tréboles muy atractivo, la mirada se dirige hacia él. En lo alto está el campanario de la parroquia, una estructura imponente que se eleva sobre el edificio principal. Se va estrechando a medida que asciende, terminando en una aguja puntiaguda. Este diseño es visualmente impresionante. Las aberturas en el campanario están decoradas con patrones de piedra tallada que añaden un toque ornamental muy llamativo.
Sadly, when I approached it, its condition saddened me greatly. The Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, once a symbol of splendor and beauty, now lies in ruins. The deterioration is evident, and it is painful to see how a building with so much history and architectural value is crumbling.
Lamentablemente, cuando me acerqué a ella, su estado me entristeció enormemente. La Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, antaño símbolo de esplendor y belleza, yace ahora en ruinas. El deterioro es evidente, y es doloroso ver cómo se desmorona un edificio con tanta historia y valor arquitectónico.
Seeing the church in its dire state, I felt the need to share my memories and reflect on the importance of preserving our heritage. This post is a call for action to restore and preserve this architectural treasure. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish is not only a historical monument, but also a symbol of our identity and culture.
