Mexico is doing its part regarding the agreement reached between Presidents Claudia Sheinbaum and Donald Trump to suspend for thirty days the application of 25% tariffs on all Aztec products imported into the United States. The head of the Zócalo Square pledged to deploy 10,000 troops along the border. Trump campaigned and largely won by promising a tough hand against irregular migration and fentanyl trafficking, and by associating harsh punishments to those foreign actors accused of not doing their part to prevent these dynamics. Last Thursday, the “Northern Border of Tamaulipas” operation was launched, consisting of the deployment of 300 National Guard agents in certain cities pregnant with violence such as Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo, and Reynosa. “The objective is to inhibit drug trafficking, to inhibit human trafficking, and also to inhibit arms trafficking from the southern U.S. into Mexico”, a National Guard official told the Spanish news agency EFE. One of the points where surveillance will be reinforced is the Rio Bravo (Rio Grande in the United States).
Yesterday, Friday, information was shared about so-called “mirror operations” coordinated between Mexican and U.S. security forces on both sides of the border dividing the states of Chihuahua and Texas. “We meet at strategic points to plan which zones we are going to patrol. They do it on the American side and we do it simultaneously on the Mexican side,” said the Chihuahua State Public Safety Secretary. A clear objective here is also to “inhibit” the irregular crossing of migrants. In more recent memory is the discovery of a multi-purpose clandestine tunnel estimated to have been operational for two years that connected violent Ciudad Juárez—I suggest this recent Netflix proposal, staged there—with El Paso Texas. “It's hard to think it was the only tunnel. That's why we are working in coordination with Border Patrol and agencies from both countries, patrolling the border area looking for other similar structures,” said the Mexican official.
In the border state of Nuevo León, 600 members of the National Guard were deployed as well, with elements of the state security force increasing their presence in three municipalities near the Texas border. Last year there were more than 1,500 intentional homicides in Nuevo León. National Guard agents are also deployed in other border cities such as Tijuana, Baja California state. Meanwhile, with the mobilization of 1,500 more active duty soldiers to the southern border, the number of U.S. troops taking part in Trump's anti-immigrant strategy will rise to 3,600. They are expected to work on placing more concertina wire barriers, providing or gathering intelligence, and other logistical support activities for the Border Patrol. Mexico's Claudia Sheinbaum, like her political mentor and former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has been able to handle the threat posed by having Trump sitting at the Resolute desk deftly for the time being. In this sense, it has been very useful for her to have the support of the private business sector, which is extremely concerned about the possibility of the tariffs becoming a reality.
