I heard a splash in the water and noticed some people looking across the bay. I saw a seal pop up and then take a shallow dive whilst flapping its tail, as if trying to smack something on the water. Maybe it was fishing, I thought. I took out my phone to take video but was not fast enough before the seal dove and disappeared in the ocean depths.
I happened to be there a week later and again saw a seal smacking the water. This time I was lucky to capture some of the action as shown in the video. I have never seen seals do this behaviour, so it was exciting to be there when it was happening. What could it be?
According to MS Co-pilot, seals hit the water with their tails for a few different reasons:
1. Communication: They use tail-slapping to communicate with other seals, either to signal alarm or to establish dominance.
2. Hunting: The sound and movement can startle fish and other prey, making them easier to catch.
3. Play: Sometimes, it's just for fun and exercise!
Seals are quite the multi-taskers! 🦭
