Oh dear old sand from which man was formed and to which man will return.
Hello, welcome to my blog. It's another round of the #proofofbrain photo contest and the topic is Sand.
As we know, sand is one of the free and commonest gifts of nature and can be found all over the world, from beaches to deserts, forests. I doubt if there's any town, city or country on this earth that is lacking of sand, no matter how little.
Even right inside our homes, you will also find sand. No matter how well tiled, well swept or vacuumed our homes are, these little grains will always find a way to get in, hehehe. Can we actually get rid of sand in our homes? No way because just like water, it is one of the most important materials that is used in constructing most of our houses.
Man isn't the only creature who knows about this usefulness of sand, termites and ants do too. Little wonder they use sand to build their mounded nests. In fact a mound or anthill contains over 46% of sand.

I captured this photo some months ago at Onne, Rivers State, precisely at the Niger Naval College. There were lots of termite mounds of different sizes and shapes there, which was rather surprising. I guess it's because of the rich fertile loam sand / soil, they have there.
To build these mounds, termites gather sand grains of different sizes that they bind together with their saliva, thus making them strong to weather the heavy rain, storm, including protection against predators. These mounds are usually very strong almost like rocks and can outlive the colonies themselves just like a building outlives it's owner.
Seeing the mound, I couldn't help but wonder the length of time it took them, the teamwork and dedication they employed in order to erect this elaborate masterpiece. The administrative pattern of these creatures sure needs to be studied.

See how big the size is. Some termite mounds can sometimes have a diameter of 30 metres (98 ft) and can house millions of termites!. I feel goosebumps here, woosh. Imagine seeing these little creepy creatures matching out of the tunnels in millions, all headed to invade the house of a man who killed their queen. I bet the man will run for his dear life, hehehe.
