Diabetes is considered a silent killer by the medical community. It earns its name because when you’re diagnosed with diabetes, it just doesn’t stop there. It could affect the way our heart, liver and brain function too. Before one is diagnosed with Diabetes, there’s a phase called the “Prediabetes” where according to Hillary Wright is the condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for the person to be considered as Diabetic. While there are also genetic predispositions, our lifestyle could also pose risk especially when we live a sedentary lifestyle as well as some other risk factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, smoking and indulging in too much sugar sweetened drinks or meals. To know about our condition, there are some tests that could be done such as the Hemoglobin A1C tests FPG tests, Oral Glucose Tolerance test. The FPG (fasting plasma glucose) can be done at home these days with home testing kit. They are one of the steps to an early detection and if you do have a result above 100 milligrams per deciliter to even 125 is considered pre-diabetes and that’s when you should be wary and work reversing that and start living towards a healthier life. The book also talks about medical implications and approach to preventing diabetes, it does not leave out the part about our psyche. Wright also offers some tips to manage our emotions to success in changing our lifestyle and behavior. When you’re tasked to change the way you eat, that isn’t something easy to do. It can feel a little overwhelming and even stressful. Wright advises in her book to also keep a food journal, avoiding overeating at night as well as being patient as it really takes time to reverse it all. In her words,
Try to accept that it probably took years to get where uou are, and that tossing out unhealthful habits and replacing them with better ones takes time.
I honestly got the book because I wanted to learn more about it. My grandma and biological father died due to diabetes complication. Now, I am also taking care of my adoptive dad who has diabetes. With all these people in my family that has them, diabetes isn’t something new to me. I witnessed horror stuff about it and that isn’t the best way to live. While my grandma could live up to 70, she remained reliant on her medication and was very active throughout her life. She did the best she could to keep her blood sugar stable and that was also a bit of work. With my adoptive dad, the diabetes affected his neurology and neuropathy along with some other complications. So, it’s pretty scary to think about that diabetes could shorted someone’s life span. By understanding how to prevent all that, I was hoping I could pass on the knowledge to someone else that might need them. This book was one of it that got me understand nutrition a lot more and helped me evaluate the things I’ve eaten throughout my weight loss journay thus far.
Anyway, if you are prediabetes, this is a great book to have as it offers some approach that can be applicable to your life. There are also ways shown to control our portion as well as food that we might have to limit if we are diagnosed with it. This book is definitely another suplement besides professional advice.
This week reads is pretty simple as I haven’t read much as I’d like last week. So, that’s why I don’t really have that many books. Next week will be a lot better as I am slowly picking up the vibe and now it’s also cozy days to read as well.
