A Quick Stroll Through Prambanan

It doesn’t matter how often you visit this place; it never gets old. This compound is timeless, and nothing has changed since.

If you love history, this is one of the best places to visit and learn how majestic temples are built, but it is also a great place to people-watch. I last visited this temple almost 4 years ago when I started my personal historical blog. Prambanan Temple: Facts Over Folktales. I learned there is to know about this temple, its structure, how it was built and the deep symbolism that lies in this place.

If there was something I was passionate about, it was ancient architecture, which never failed to mesmerize me. Think about how these structures stood over time, whereas houses these days could crumble within minutes despite the seemingly advanced construction techniques.

This time around, though, my walk was quick. It was just a hopping sort of walk, and I explored this place almost in a hurry. Even hurrying up inside this compound, you would still have to circle the place and all the spots that are there just because the management decided it’s best to add something since most people often think, “We’re only seeing stones.”

While I was shading below a banyan tree and watching the temple, I heard school kids shout 씨발 이 새끼야 ( Fuck you bastard) when a seemingly unassuming Korean visitor passed by. It’s bizarre, but thanks to their lousy pronunciation, they might not understand it. These schoolchildren kept shouting it while taking pictures, which was pretty uncomfortable.

In this place, people come all over the place, and sometimes students want to interview or have a conversation with foreigners to improve their English. I apparently learned in Vietnam that they’re doing similar things. That’s pretty much the same in Indonesia as English isn’t the main language. Most of us here are learning it as an ESL or sometimes a third language. But anyway, I heard kids yelling inappropriate stuff, and it was awkward.

When I last visited, construction was ongoing to restore the place, but it looks like something needed to be added this time. They left some parts to add a more dramatic look to the overall temple. These days, plenty of events are held in this temple square since it makes an excellent backdrop for musical/entertainment events.

My stroll was quick, but whenever I was standing in this area, I was travelling through another time. To be in that space is to experience a time-travelling experience. You get to witness how majestic and advanced the past civilization could be during its glory days.

In these frame, the biggest temple is surrounded by smaller ones. They big ones houses statues and their real dimension is actually pretty tall and high. I wonder how tall people in the past were because these temple stretches for more than 30 meters. They couldn't be 5'2 or less since the stairs are actually pretty steep too.

Also, one last thing, the ticketing system in this place is great. You can also get it from Traveloka and you don't really have to queue at the ticketing center. You will get a QR code and directly scan it at the gate. That's one thing that's changed from the management, I think which is now a lot more modern than what it used to be.

I miss traveling in Southeast Asia. I've only been to Bali. The temples remind me of Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

They bear resemblance actually and some temple in Angkor has its connection to these temple. I would love to go to Angkor, I didn't get the chance to but I'd love to do it one of these days

Yes, do it. It was a tiring day but it would take 2-3 days to see everything. XD

It's a great place to visit! I was there last time too. It's rare to find these cultural sites in ASEAN these days.

That's cool! It's definitely rare to find cultural sites that are well-preserved too. I mean, there has to be a way this place could co-exist with futuristic city and tech. I've been seeing a lot of Chongqing video, the city looks fascinating! That being said, have you been there too?

Hehe I have been to China a few times, but not to the city of Chongqing. ;)

Maybe it's time to check it out 😄

🙂

The foundation of that temple is excellent. It was built so many years ago and is still very good until now. 😊

It seems to me a very nice place, not only from the structure but also visually it looks quite particular and striking. It is not just a pile of stones, but a construction with a lot of history ♥️

Please don't repeat everything you hear over there 🫢😅 Excellent photos 🤓👏👏👏.

hahahaha it's a curse that I have pretty good memory. I heard interesting stuff and I'd remember it for a long time and they make interesting story hahaha

It's definitely a structure full of history and I don't think we could ever replicate it.

You'll get something interesting out of it for sure 😅 And regarding the place, I think the fact that you can't replicate something like that is what makes it more special 🥰.

The photographs of the temples are very suggestive, I have also been transported to another time. Thank you for the text and for sharing these images from another world.

You're welcome. It's such a timeless work of architecture.

Waoooo!!! 😲🤩 que bonito lugar y experiencia @macchiata, las imágenes espectaculares, todas hermanos. Gracias por compartir tu experiencia con nosotros!! 😊👏

gracias por visitar 😊

I would love to see these temples. I'm a huge history goof who like to ponder on how the heck did they do that so long ago. Also like you mentioned, why can't we make houses that can withstand time now? Haha

Right? I reckon you'd love to see these places as they are built around 8-9th century. It's simply stood around centuries and even withstand natural disasters since this area has active volcano and often has earthquake. The fact that the big ones didn't crumble is certainly telling that the ancient people were smart.

Yes or if your into theories ancient aliens 👽 could have had a hand 🤣 Anyways simple amazing how some old structures were so big and were constructed with heavy materials but didnt have the modern construction equipment.

It looks like those enchanted castles I use to watch in ancient movies. So people used to live in this place ages ago history is surely one spot that goes deep

Yes, people used this place as either worship or a place they often frequent too. Their residential area though isn't necessarily there but at another temple that is as old as that one & is majestic

I can see that the place must be really quite too. I thought it was a tourist center?

These schoolchildren kept shouting it while taking pictures, which was pretty uncomfortable.

Where were the teachers? Did anyone tell them to stop? I would have been so annoyed.

Such incredible architecture!

Nobody told them to stop even I was at fault for just being bystander 😅 I think their teachers didn't know what it meant so that's why they didn't say anything about it. Such a pity that they did.

I think sometimes kids do listen when an adult shouts at them! You should have done. But I understand why you didn't.

Keep up the great work 💪

Besutiful. I had love to visit one day😍

Thank you and please do, whenever you get the chance to

Sure! Thanks

Being a lover of history, I have read a lot about people from the past being giants or just really tall. It's amazing how buildings from the past just as this and other findings gives us an insight of what has been.

I think they're just really tall and as you see, these temples are built that way too and I can imagine the pyramids was also the same way. But for some reason, these days esp in Asia, people are generally short 😅 I mean there's a whole lot of reasons but it was intriguing to know that perhaps our ancestors weren't that short

Possibly gene alteration by cross breeding among race 😅..

Wow, so much history associate with this temple. It's definitely going to be on my bucket list. When I have enough money to tour around the world, I'll surely visit.

For sure! I hope you can be a millionaire soon, so you can travel the world in style 😆

Amen to that. 🤗

These places fascinate me so much. There is so much of the old world that is lost to us. It doesnt make sense to me how old these are and how they could have been constructed thousands of years ago. I really think that we as humans have been lied to about our past.

I really hope you'd visit Asia again one of these days. There are so many things that you'd love to check out around here. And I agree with you, the more I dig about these architectures, I think we've missed some parts of our history and been lied to.

I hope this place is far from destructive hands, seeing the last time I was here, there were many things that were fragile and could possibly be damaged and destroyed.

The corrossion is their main concern actually and over tourism. There was a time when a lot of its structure are not allowed to be visited. But these days, it seems the rules have changed again. It's unfortunate because to preserve this beauty, I think it needs less human visitors and touch as well.
