Have you ever had Durian? even more so, Durian coffee?

In Southeast Asia, durian is the diva. This exotic fruit is sold in various countries around the region and is always a fascination for foreigners. Many shops also sell this fruit not only as a whole fruit but also as creams, cakes, and ice creams. But have you ever wondered how it would be if Durian was mixed with coffee?

Yogyakarta is a home to a charming cafe called " Gandhok" coffee. This cozy and homey cafe offers not just a spceto work but also an opportunity to taste its unique signature coffees, crafted with locally source ingredients. In this place, you can also find homemade kombucha, brewed and produced on-site that adds more uniqueness to this place.

Upon entering the cafe, it feels like you’re entering the comfort of your home. The bar is located in the back of the house, so it doesn’t feel too intimidating. They also proudly displayed some freshly roasted beans that they are going to use for the coffee.

Many of my friends rave about their cheesecake. They said it's the best in town but I didn't try it. I did try their Zapiekanka which comes in several yummy options including mushroom, chicken and beef. But, what really caught my attention is their Durian Espresso.

DSC04998.JPG

I was skeptical if they will use syrup as most places are using syrup instead of actual flavorings. So, when it arrived, I asked the server whether the coffee uses actual durian or syrups. Since I would get so disappointed if they only use syrup rather than actual fruits. But the server told me they use actual durians and I was pleasantly surprised.

The Durian espresso features a creamy, rich durian blended with thick espresso. It looks like an affogato more than latte.

Surprisingly, the flavors blends so nicely that it was an enjoyable drink. Although I think of it more as a coffee dessert; it's sweet without any added sugar and perfect for an after-meal treat rather than your typical morning joe.

This drink also pair well with the Zapiekanka, which is mostly savory and cheesy. So, these two blend really well and are something I would recommend trying. I honestly think even if you don’t like Durian, you’ll like this mixture because it has the texture of Affogato more than a latte mix.

Would you be tempted to give it a try?

I'm glad you were able to enjoy this fruit, which I'm getting to know through your post. Thanks for showing it to me, I always learn from your culture in your posts, I hope you have more opportunities to enjoy it like this.

Zapiekanka with certificate of authenticity 🇵🇱

Awesome, now I can tell that to people it 😂 that it's close to authentic haha

Zapiekanka / PL

Totally approved by another native! :D Yup, the one on the last photo looks very close. I'd even risk saying, it looks a bit TOO good :D it looks better/tastier than many I often see/eat in little pass-by snack-shops.

Here's a typical one - I had to look for some photo online - because I don't have any (why would I have a photo of somethig so mundane) - this below comes from https://www.tasteatlas.com/zapiekanka/recipe - and apparently from shutterstock

image.png

The thing usually is a bit "flatter" thank yours and definitely doesn't have that much meat - they are just made cheap. On the photo you can even see a typical double-paper-french-fries-tray that you get to hold those. Terrible thing to be honest. Now some snackshops use "modern" paper trays bent in a U- or C- shape instead of those old flat ones. Better, but still hard to not make mess with ketchup/breadcrumbs/oil/etc.

Now I want to eat one, eh! :)

(why would I have a photo of somethig so mundane

hahaha I can see that. For us, that isn't mundane at all 😄 I actually had them a couple of times here in Indonesia 🇮🇩 but nothing beats that one since it was apparently made from a specialized Zapiekanka baker.

How much do they typically cost over there? I reckon it's like burger or hotdog?

We've had an awful inflation run over last few years, and everything went up dramatically. I remember them buying them in street-food-stalls for 5-6 PLN decades ago, ~10-15 PLN a bit before covid and inflation. Now to be honest, I haven't bought any for 3 or 4 years? I checked some online menus it's hard to find a reasonable one under 20 PLN (delivery not included), that's about 4.80$, and typical fancy/prestige/vege/eco/etc start at 30 PLN, woowz..

But let's do a classic McDonald benchmark - 1 cheaper Zapiekanka for ~20 PLN - that's about the same as 1x BigMac (22pln)! What a surprise - for all the time I remember, they were considered 'quick cheap snack' and they used to cost closer to a half of that mac-burger. Or maybe 2x-3x of a "pączek" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C4%85czki ). Now it seems it's more like 4x-5x? I'll have to check the prices once I'm near some snack bar area, because I find those prices from internet menus hard to believe (oO)

Anyways, happy to hear they are noticed and available and also well-made outside Poland!

This looks intriguingly delicious. They sell durian here, but I've always been intimidated by its size and powerful scent, so I've never bought one for fear I may not like it. I should try it one of these days.

here's what I'd recommend, mash the durian (blend them) add espresso on top that's how it's done and best 😄

You mean mash the whole fruit or just a portion?

I mean just use the durian meat and please exclude the seed😂 it should look something like this

image.png

I'll have to get my hands on a durian and try it out. :)

Indeed! Warning : don't add sugar hahaha cause it's gonna be really sweet

Never try this combination. But yes "es teller durian". I am curious about the creamy texture. So it is the good sign they use good quality of durian, because the taste is sweet without any sugar.

They use this very sweet durian and that's true, it's already sweet without sugar added. The cost was also reasonable. It was around 32k idr and for durian, I'd say a good deal 😆

Super good deal. Yogya is heaven for good deal. Medan is similar with Jakarta. Every thing at cafe just pricey ehehe.

Because I like onions and garlic, and use onions for savory sweetness in meals, I think I could manage this particular combo IF I were where fresh durian was available.

I really think you could. It's that sweet and I think you'll like it.

The coffee seems toop frothy 😂😂😂

Although maybe I'm just not used to the concept 😂😂

I can't imagine putting fruit in my coffee 😂😂

I think you're not used to the concept 😂 once you're used to it, it's not that bad. If you're also experimental, the coffee is great too!

Wow durian with coffee! Surprisingly I haven't seen it being served here. How much did it cost though, compared to a normal coffee?

I mean it costs as much as typical latte, around $2.5 🤣 So it's not that expensive.

Price seems reasonable. I thought it would have been more expensive when durians are added.

Would Durian be the same plant family with jackfruit? This coffee has my name written all over it lol 😂

They are actually different kinds of fruit. They might look the same but waaay different.

Oh yeah that's true. Lots of fruit out there look same but taste different too.

Hmm I haven't had thos before but with the look of it wish I can see where to get it here, or better still make it myself will browse about it

Wow! It is my first time to hear about Durian coffee ☕
There's a lot of Durian fruit in my country, but I haven't heard about Durian coffee. Maybe some coffee shops here have it.I am excited to try it. 😊
