What Is GHAWG?

#GHAWG is short for "God's Hog: A Watchful Guardian." This fictional story tells how David Guardia, a courier and business owner from Bayonne, New Jersey, US moved into the next phase of his life after spending the final ten years of his ailing father's life helping him.

More details can be found in the first post of this weekly recap.

With the Blue Whale behind us, we were going to do something we hadn't done since we were in Montana: we were going to ride through 3 states. We were going to leave OK to ride 30 miles through Kansas before entering Missouri.
🏍️ Route 66, the legendary and iconic road of American history and culture, goes through 8 states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The shortest stretch of road taken by Route 66 is in Kansas. Essentially, if you blink, you miss the Kansas portion of the ride. So in a short amount of time anyone riding east along Route 66 can go out of Oklahoma, through Kansas, and into Illinois.

In between the 10 miles separating Catoosa & Claremore was Vedegris. In between the roughly 18.6 miles separating Claremore from Chelsea were Sequoyah, Foyil, & Bushyhead. These are the more residential areas along Old Route 66.
🏍️ Catoosa, Claremore, and Chelsea were notable stops along Old Route 66. In between each were smaller places with their own charms to add to a ride along Old Route 66. From California to Texas, the dominant color was tan due to the desert settings touched by the western half of Old Route 66. With Felix Legion riding through Oklahoma toward Illinois, the dominant color will turn to green due to an increase in population along the road.

Speaking of Claremore, this was at the edge of our day's ride. After checking in at the Super 8 by Wyndham Claremore OK, we split into 3 groups. Lately Lindsay had been spending more time with The Twins, questioning & listening.
🏍️ David and Rhonda Bella Guardia, for obvious reasons, need their own accommodations when Felix Legion spends the night at a hotel or motel. The Twins, Hank Marchenko and Frank Marchenko, tend to stay together. The Kids, foreign exchange students Sanjay Rampersad from India and Lionel Odunsi from Nigeria and matriculants for their senior year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, also keep together as a unit. Until recently, Lionel Odunsi had been associated with The Kids due to the interest she had in Sanjay. Since just before reaching Defiance, New Mexico, US Lindsay had been riding solo on the Victory motorcycle Rhonda had gifted her when she and David Guardia re-emerged from their 7-day honeymoon in San Diego, California, US. With a clearer head these days, Lindsay has been spending more time with the Brothers Marchenko, and during that time she's been becoming more familiar not just with Christinaity (which she gets more from David, anyway), but also free-enterprise economics and libertarian pholosophy. Her questioning of The Twins hasn't been so much to prove them wrong as it is to understand why people would find them more appealing.

"There's no reason for anyone to have $1B," said Lindsay.

"So Frank & I can't have $1B?" asked Hank.

"Well, you guys aren't thieves."

"Exactly," began Frank. "People're entitled to whatever's freely given. Taxation is theft."
🏍️ Although it is possible for billionaires-- especially when counted in USD-- to be made purely from business and inheritance, most come into being due in no small part to government intervention as it chooses winners and losers in the greater economy. The usual suspects among billionaires would be defense contractors and corporations receiving large amounts of subsidies from the government. Billionaires who reach that status without help from government are rare to the point of being considered mythical. Sales and revenues come from people voluntarily trading their money for goods and services they want. Subsidies, on the other hand, are aids from the government, and subsidies originate from tax collection. People are coerced into paying taxes through the threat of imprisonment. No one pays taxes voluntarily; it's always done under threat and coercion. For anyone who disagrees, see what happens when you choose not to pay tax and the government pays a visit.

Lionel was catching up on his coursework in business administration. Doing this away from UNC is the price he chose to pay for staying with us. Sanjay is in a similar situation, even though in his case it's independent study.
🏍️ Lionel and Sanjay are supposed to be at UNC to complete their undergraduate studies before returning to their respective nations. Although this is the first time Rat Bike ever touches on this point, it can be assumed that The Kids have been doing this since the academic year began while they were on the road.

"What's the current price for an empty shipping container, Rhonda?"

"Last I checked, around $5K. Why?"

"I was wondering if we should buy an existing home or build one. Quickly."

"We'll need to pay for more than containers."
🏍️ During the early years of the 2020s, prices in general had gone up to a number of factors. Much of the rise was due to inflation, but some of it was due to restrictive energy policies. These had the unwanted side effect of cascading into all aspects of the economy: energy extraction, processing of raw materials, manufacturing using these processed materials, transporting goods to market, inventory, payroll, other forms of overhead. Housing and real estate didn't escape the effects of these price increases. David Guardia had been considering where he and his wife Rhonda would be living once his Epic Ride was history. They could rent an apartment for a while. They could live in a tiny house; but for that they are better off living in the spacious cabin of her truck. They could finance a home as most people have done. They could also take advantage of using empty sipping containers to reduce construction time. Given her upbringing in Iowa, Rhonda was more familiar with hosing than David, so she knows of other factors which would escape consideration by David from New Jersey.

Chelsea is where the tourist-type attractions resumed. Today one attraction required us to leave our bikes parked: the Chelsea Route 66 Underpass. So for a few minutes we became pedestrians to "get our kicks UNDER Route 66."
🏍️ One reason people travel along Old Route 66 is to see attractions of all types: murals, signage, memorials, watering holes, parks, Eat-at-Joe's, off-the-wall structures, artwork, and who knows what else. Most travelers would expect to see these attractions above ground. The Chelsea Route 66 Underpass is perhaps the only attraction along Old Route 66 which has to be seen and experienced by going literally beneath the surface.

Story Arc So Far

Felix Legion continues its ride east along Old Route 66. At this point, Felix Legion is in northeast Oklahoma near state lines with Kansas and Missouri.
