Yesterday marked another year since the birth of the Liberator and Father of the Homeland, Simón Bolívar.
Born on July 24, 1783 in the city of Caracas, then capital of the Captaincy General of Venezuela belonging to the Kingdom of Spain, Bolivar was a military man who led the South American wars of independence against the Spanish at the beginning of the 19th century, being considered the liberator of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and of course, his homeland Venezuela.
Although in recent times there have been many controversies about his person and his legacy, as has always happened with every great man; the truth is that Bolivar was a visionary of his time, but above all a man with mistakes and successes, with his virtues and flaws as a human being in the end.
Ayer se conmemoró un año más del natalicio de El Libertador y Padre de la Patria, Simón Bolívar.
Nacido el 24 de Julio de 1783 en la ciudad de Caracas, entonces capital de la Capitanía General de Venezuela perteneciente al Reino de España, Bolívar fué un militar que lideró las guerras independentistas sudamericanas contra los españoles a principios del Siglo XIX, considerándosele el libertador de Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panamá, Perú, y por su supuesto, su tierra natal Venezuela.
Aunque en los últimos tiempos han surgido múltiples controversias sobre su persona y su legado, como ha ocurrido siempre con todo gran hombre; lo cierto es que Bolívar fué un visionario de su época, pero ante todo un hombre con errores y aciertos, con sus virtudes y defectos como ser humano al fin.
In all Venezuelan towns, or at least in the vast majority and regardless of their size, importance or location, there is a Plaza Bolivar, a public space designed to pay tribute to him, usually located in the central area of each town, and where there is a decorative monument such as an equestrian statue cast in bronze, or a small and humble bust of his face.
In the case of Barquisimeto, the fourth largest city in the country in terms of population, and where I live, the Plaza Bolivar is located in the colonial center and surrounded by some of the main local and regional governmental entities, such as the Mayor's Office, the Palace of Justice, the Barquisimeto Tourism Corporation and the local offices of the National Tax System, among others.
At the beginning, the place where the square is currently located was occupied by houses that were affected by the 1812 earthquake that struck most of the national territory. Later, over the years, a plaza was built with different names until 1930, when the pedestal with the equestrian statue of Bolivar, which was made in Europe, was placed.
These photos that I share with all of you were taken at the end of last year during a tour of the center on the eve of the 471st anniversary of the founding of the city.
En todas las poblaciones venezolanas, o al menos en la gran mayoría e independientemente de su tamaño, importancia o ubicación; existe una Plaza Bolívar, un espacio público destinado a rendirle homenaje, generalmente situado en el casco central de cada población, y donde existe algún monumento decorativo como puede ser una estatua ecuestre fundida en bronce, o un pequeño y humilde busto de su rostro.
En el caso de Barquisimeto, la cuarta ciudad del país en cuanto a población, y donde resido, la Plaza Bolívar se encuentra ubicada en el casco colonial y rodeada de algunos de los principales entes gubernamentales locales y regionales, como lo son la sede de la Alcaldía, el Palacio de Justicia, la Corporación de Turismo de Barquisimeto y las oficinas locales del Sistema Nacional Tributario, entre otros.
En un principio, el lugar donde se encuentra ubicada la plaza actualmente, estuvo ocupado con viviendas que resultaron afectadas con el terremoto de 1812 que azotó gran parte del territorio nacional. Posteriormente, con el transcurso de los años, se construyó una plaza que tuvo diferentes nombres hasta que en 1930 se coloca el pedestal con la estatua ecuestre de Bolívar, la cual fué elaborada en Europa.
Estas fotos que comparto con todos ustedes, las tomé a finales del año pasado durante un recorrido que realicé al centro en vísperas del aniversario número 471 de la fundación de la ciudad.
